Kőszeg, Hungary: Self-Guided Walking Tour

Things to do in Kőszeg: historic streets, churches and museums

The best things to do in Kőszeg are concentrated around a compact historic centre shaped by castles, churches, pharmacies and the town’s Jewish heritage. Near the Austrian border and the wooded Kőszeg Mountains, this western Hungarian town is especially rewarding to explore on foot. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Kőszeg, with 10 narrated places to discover as you walk.

What to see in Kőszeg

Bechtold István Nature Conservation Visitor Centre

At the western edge of Kőszeg, the Bechtold István Nature Conservation Visitor Centre stands in Aradi vértanúk Park, close to the Chernel-kert Arboretum. Its round building is partly set into the ground and faced with natural stone, giving it a strong visual connection with the surrounding landscape.

Black Saracen Pharmacy Museum

The Black Saracen Pharmacy Museum occupies Kőszeg’s first pharmacy, which operated in the building from 1665 until 1983. Its rooms trace the history of pharmacy through interiors and objects from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries.

The original cherrywood furniture, made in the middle of the nineteenth century, remains in its original location. The exhibition begins in the former pharmacy’s ground-floor officina, created between 1850 and 1860, and includes a seventeenth-century pharmacy interior, a nineteenth-century laboratory setting and rooms filled with laboratory equipment.

Generals’ House

Known locally as Tábornokház, the Generals’ House is one of the characteristic buildings on Jurisics Square. It stands in the medieval town centre, where it forms part of the square’s historic architectural setting.

Pharmacy to the Golden Unicorn

The Pharmacy to the Golden Unicorn, or Patikamúzeum, occupies the former Golden Unicorn pharmacy at Jurisics tér 11. The building has been restored to reflect its appearance at the end of the eighteenth century.

Its permanent exhibition follows the development of pharmaceutical practice through objects from civilian and monastic pharmacies in Vas County, dating from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. Among its most valuable displays is the furniture from Kőszeg’s former Jesuit pharmacy, made between 1737 and 1743. The rooms also contain measuring and testing instruments, earlier medicinal materials, pharmacy vessels and historic documents connected with the building and the Jesuit pharmacy.

Jurisics Castle

Jurisics Castle, also known as Jurisics-vár, is one of Kőszeg’s defining landmarks. The reconstructed fortress stands in the historic old town and reflects the central role that fortified architecture has played in the town’s identity.

Óház

Óház, also known as Óház-tető, is a mountain in Hungary above Kőszeg. Its elevated setting offers a change of atmosphere from the medieval streets and provides one of the town’s natural points of interest.

Holy Cross Church

On the hill above Kőszeg, the Holy Cross Church occupies a distinctive setting at an elevation of 393 metres. This Roman Catholic church combines a religious landmark with a hilltop location overlooking the town’s surroundings.

Sacred Heart Church

The Sacred Heart Church, or Jézus Szíve templom, stands where Várkör and the market area meet Kőszeg’s main square. Its tall tower and Gothic Revival design make it one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

Built between 1892 and 1894, the church replaced the Korona Hotel that had stood on the main square. Its architect was Ludwig Schöne of Vienna. The building is a three-nave hall church with a transept and a polygonal sanctuary, while its tower rises 57 metres alongside two pinnacles.

Inside, carved wooden altars made in Vienna and Tirol stand beneath stained-glass windows donated by local families. The windows depict Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Hungarian saints including Saint Stephen, Saint Ladislaus, Saint Elizabeth and Saint Margaret. The church also preserves medieval and Baroque furnishings, goldsmith’s work and two chalices dating from 1421 and 1486, brought from the older Saint James Church.

Saint Emeric Church

Saint Emeric Church stands on Jurisics Square beside Saint James Church. This Roman Catholic church served as Kőszeg’s parish church from 1697 until 1894, when the Church of the Sacred Heart was consecrated.

Its position beside the square and neighbouring church makes it a natural stop while exploring the historic centre.

Synagogue in Kőszeg

The Synagogue in Kőszeg is one of the town’s most important buildings connected with its Jewish community. Built in 1859, it reflects the presence of a small but rapidly developing community.

The Jewish community in Kőszeg ceased to exist in 1951, after which the synagogue complex deteriorated. The property was state-owned from 1944 until 1996, then passed into private ownership and remained in need of restoration until work began in autumn 2020. Following extensive renovation, the synagogue was ceremonially reopened on August 25, 2022.
