Van Goghkerk

The Van Goghkerk is also known as the Catharinakerk or Raadhuiskerk. Standing at Raadhuisplein 2, it was historically the Protestant church of Etten. The building is also associated with the Dutch Reformed Church, or Nederlands Hervormde Kerk.

Trouwkerkje Leur

The Trouwkerkje is a small former Dutch Reformed church in Leur. Dating from 1614, it stands at Van Bergenplein 1 and is recognized as a Rijksmonument, a protected national monument in the Netherlands. Its name means “little wedding church.”

Sint-Lambertuskerk

In the centre of Etten, the neo-Gothic Sint-Lambertuskerk is one of the town’s most prominent landmarks. It is a three-aisled transept basilica designed by P. J. van Genk. Its tower dates from 1877, and the church was consecrated in 1878.

The church is listed as a national monument. In front of it stands the Sacred Heart statue, known locally as the Heilig Hartbeeld, which dates from 1926.

Sint-Petruskerk

The Sint-Petruskerk gives Leur another distinctive neo-Gothic landmark. Designed by P. J. van Genk and completed and consecrated in 1889, the Roman Catholic church has a cross-basilica plan, a three-aisled nave and twin towers topped with eight-sided spires.

Inside, the choir ends in five sides and is accompanied by two side chapels and a sacristy. The church has been designated a Rijksmonument since 1976. A cemetery lies behind the building.

Drukkerijmuseum

At the Drukkerijmuseum, the Dutch Printing Museum in Etten-Leur, traditional book printing is presented as a working craft rather than simply a display. The museum was founded in 1976 and covers every stage of traditional book printing.

Its historic print shop is arranged as it might have looked in the 1950s. In the large printers’ hall, the old presses are still operational, and visitors can make their own print. Workshops cover hand typesetting, letterpress printing and bookbinding. By appointment, visitors can also use the machines and workspaces themselves.

Huysmuseum

The Huysmuseum approaches psychiatry through history, personal experience and changing exhibitions. It opened on June 1, 2013, with a permanent exhibition tracing the history of psychiatry. Temporary exhibitions explore perspectives ranging from traditional to new and sometimes unsettling.

Allerheiligst Hart van Jezuskerk

The former Allerheiligst Hart van Jezuskerk stood at Kerkwerve 2 in Etten. Although the church was demolished in 2012, its history reflects the expansion of the Banakkers district.

A new parish was established there in 1954, and the church was built three years later, in 1957. Designed by W. J. Bunnik, it was a modest brick building in a traditionalist style, with three naves, a cross-shaped plan and a heavy tower over the crossing. Its design drew on early Christian and Romanesque examples.

The Battle of the Scheldt

The Battle of the Scheldt is the story of one of the Second World War’s most important campaigns in northern Belgium and the southwestern Netherlands. Fought from 2 October to 8 November 1944, it was the largest operation on Dutch territory during the war.

The five-week campaign involved amphibious landings, difficult crossings and costly attacks across open ground. German forces flooded parts of the Scheldt estuary and delayed the Allied advance. The Allies suffered 20,873 casualties, including 6,367 Canadians.

Clearing the Scheldt was essential because the harbours still had to be de-mined before they could support the Allied advance. On 28 November 1944, the first convoy of Allied supplies unloaded in Antwerp. Between November 1944 and April 1945, the port received 2.5 million tons of supplies.
