Things to Do in Gouda: Historic Churches, Cheese Heritage and Quiet Streets

Gouda is a historic city in South Holland, known for its monumental buildings, waterways, religious heritage and strong connection with cheese and traditional crafts. The compact centre brings together Gothic architecture, former monasteries, memorials and peaceful green spaces, making it a rewarding place to explore on foot. Neywo’s free audio guide for Gouda covers 30 narrated places, helping you discover the city as you walk.

What to See in Gouda

Start with Gouda’s historic centre

Gouda stands where the Gouwe meets the Hollandse IJssel. River transport helped the city grow during the Middle Ages, and Gouda received its city rights in 1272. By the end of the Middle Ages, it had become the fifth city of Holland.

Many monumental buildings have survived in the historic centre. The city’s heritage reflects its past as a centre of waterborne trade, religion and craft, while its name remains closely associated with cheese, candles and other traditional products.

De Goudse Waag and Gouda’s cheese tradition

On the Markt, De Goudse Waag recalls the importance of cheese to the city’s history. This historic cheese weigh house was designed by architect Pieter Post. Construction is associated with 1668, and the building was completed in 1670.

As a single-purpose building created for weighing cheese, the Waag represents the culmination of this architectural type. Its connection with Gouda’s cheese trade makes it one of the most distinctive buildings on the square and an essential stop for anyone looking for things to do in Gouda.

Janskerk, or Sint-Janskerk

The Janskerk—also known as the Sint-Janskerk or Grote Kerk—is one of Gouda’s defining landmarks. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the city’s patron saint, it is a vast Gothic cross church with five aisles.

At 123 metres, it is the longest church building in the Netherlands. Much of the current structure dates from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its materials change across the building: the western third is mainly brick, while the eastern two thirds are largely made from tuff stone in brick-sized blocks, with natural stone used for decoration and many window surrounds.

The church’s greatest treasure is the Gouda Glass, a collection of 72 stained-glass windows. Together, they cover about 1,755 square metres. The earliest surviving windows date from 1555, while three are modern. Their biblical and historical scenes fill the interior with colour and make Janskerk one of the most important places to visit in Gouda.

Museum Gouda and the Lazaruspoortje

Museum Gouda is another important stop in the old centre. Nearby, the Lazaruspoortje provides the entrance to the museum garden at Achter de Kerk.

The gateway dates from 1609 and was probably made by Gregorius Cool, a sculptor from Gouda. It originally stood at Rotterdamse Veer, now called Nonnenwater, where it gave access to a leprosy hospital on the Gouwe. Its carvings show the biblical story of the rich man and poor Lazarus, along with figures associated with people living with leprosy. The gateway was dismantled in 1940 and later became part of the museum setting.

De Vier Gekroonden at Naaierstraat 6

At Naaierstraat 6 stands De Vier Gekroonden, a late Gothic house and a national monument. Its name refers to a frieze from the beginning of the sixteenth century depicting four martyrs.

The scene recalls four fourth-century martyrs who, in 306, refused to build an idol for the emperor Diocletian. The carved frieze is the detail to look for when viewing this protected historic house.

Gouwekerk

The Gouwekerk, formerly known as the Sint-Jozefkerk, is a former Roman Catholic church along the Hoge Gouwe. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century in the Neo-Gothic style, it has a red-brick, cross-shaped structure.

Its most recognisable feature is the slender spire rising above the roof crossing. Partly openwork and six-sided, the tower reaches about 80 metres and forms the highest point in the city. It is visible from far across the surrounding area.

Johannes de Doperkerk and Galerie Montulet

Galerie Montulet is located at the Johannes de Doperkerk, also known as the Heilige Johannes de Doperkerk or the Schuilkerk. The church building offers a quieter place of worship within Gouda’s historic landscape.

Its setting adds another layer to the city’s religious history, alongside the larger Janskerk and the former churches and convents found elsewhere in the centre.

Vrouwetoren

At the corner of Nieuwehaven and Vrouwesteeg, the Vrouwetoren—also known as the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren—marks the surviving remains of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Chapel.

The chapel itself was demolished, leaving the tower as a visible reminder of the former religious complex. It is a small but distinctive feature to include on a walk through Gouda’s older streets.

Collatiehuis

The Collatiehuis was a former monastery complex on Raemstraat, also known as the Sint-Paulusconvent. It belonged to the Collatiebroeders and preserves a connection with Gouda’s religious past.

Although the site is modestly documented, its name points to the network of religious communities that helped shape the historic city.

Houtmansplantsoen and Gouda’s memorials

Houtmansplantsoen provides a green pause in the heart of Gouda. After exploring the dense historic centre, the park offers a peaceful setting in which to slow down.

The city’s memorials add further stories to a walk. The Gedenkteken A. A. van Bergen IJzendoorn commemorates the man who served as Gouda’s mayor from 1864 until 1895. Dating from 1895, the memorial was designed by Willem Kromhout, while the artist of the statue is unknown.

The Houtman Memorial, also known as the Monument for Cornelis and Frederik de Houtman, commemorates the two figures named in its title. De Steltlopers and De Kaasboerin offer smaller moments of visual interest, with the latter echoing Gouda’s close association with cheese.
