Den Burg is on Texel, the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands, in the province of North Holland. The island is about 20 kilometres long, with an average width of 8 kilometres, and received city rights as early as 1415.

Saint John the Baptist Church, also known as the Jan de Doperkerk, is a nineteenth-century Roman Catholic church in Den Burg. Its Neo-Romanesque design gives it a distinctive presence in the town. The adjoining rectory is recognised as a municipal monument, adding to the importance of the site.

De Burght

De Burght is one of Den Burg’s historic church buildings. It is also known as the Hervormde kerk, Den Burg, and was formerly called the Hervormde Kerk. Parts of the building date from 1452, connecting the church with the town’s long history.

Oudheidkamer Texel

The Georgian uprising on Texel

Texel was the scene of one of the final armed conflicts of the Second World War in Europe. The uprising began during the night of 5–6 April 1945, when a Georgian battalion serving in the German army turned against its German commanders.

The battalion, known as Königin Tamara, included around 800 Georgians and 400 Germans. The Georgian soldiers had been captured on the Eastern Front before joining the German side rather than face starvation in German prison camps. At first, they took control of much of the island and killed around 400 German soldiers, but they failed to capture the coastal artillery batteries. German reinforcements then arrived from the mainland, and weeks of heavy fighting followed.

The conflict continued after the war had officially ended in the Netherlands. The surviving Georgians were forcibly returned to the Soviet Union under the Yalta agreement. This history can be felt in several places around Den Burg, including Levensboom and the cemetery on Hoge Berg.

Hoge Berg

Hoge Berg is the highest point on Texel, although it rises only 15 metres. The protected landscape reserve lies between Den Burg and Oudeschild and was formed from glacial deposits during the Saale glaciation.

The area is recognisable for its garden walls and the walking paths that run between almost every plot of land. Hoge Berg extends into two lower areas, Noordhaffel and Zuidhaffel. On Zuidhaffel stands the Hoge Berg Texel cemetery, where Georgians who died during the uprising are buried. From the summit, the landscape opens into a broad view in every direction.

Stenenplaats

Stenenplaats is a street in Den Burg and a useful place to experience the town’s everyday character. It provides another point of reference while walking between the historical buildings and landmarks in the centre.
