The airport’s current terminal opened on December 2, 2003. Construction began in 2000, following plans announced in 1992, and the terminal was built to replace earlier airport facilities. Its development added modern navigation, security, and baggage-handling equipment and was intended to strengthen Davao’s role as a centre for tourism and foreign investment in the region.

The airport’s runway is 3,000 metres long, giving a sense of the scale of this important connection to Mindanao.
