What to see in Stein am Rhein

Hohenklingen Castle

Hohenklingen Castle stands high above Stein am Rhein on a narrow ridge of conglomerate rock, nearly 200 metres above the town. At 594 metres above sea level, its position on the southwestern spur of the Schiener Berg gave it a strategic role: it was the first toll castle along the Rhine.

The castle was built mainly during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and its history is unusually intact. Hohenklingen was never touched by war or destruction, so its walls and roofs still preserve the appearance of a medieval fortress from roughly 1200 to 1422. The main tower, or Bergfried, now serves as a lookout tower, with views over Stein am Rhein and the surrounding Rhine valley.

Stein am Rhein’s medieval old town

The old town is the place to begin if you want to understand the character of Stein am Rhein. Historic buildings line its narrow streets, many with half-timbered details, decorative oriel windows and colourful painted façades.

The murals depict historical themes, religious scenes and traditional symbols. Walking through the centre reveals these details gradually, from the main streets to the smaller passages and corners between the buildings. The result is one of the most distinctive medieval townscapes in Switzerland.

Free church

The free church is one of the religious buildings encountered in Stein am Rhein’s historic centre. Its architecture forms part of the town’s varied religious and urban landscape, alongside the Catholic Herz-Jesu Church and St. Johann church.

Herz-Jesu Catholic Church

The Herz-Jesu Catholic Church, known locally as the Katholische Herz-Jesu-Kirche, stands among the historic buildings in the heart of Stein am Rhein. It remains a notable place of worship and adds another layer to the town’s architectural character as you walk through the old streets.

Museum Lindwurm

Museum Lindwurm is a local heritage museum, or Heimatmuseum, in the historic centre of Stein am Rhein. Its exhibitions show what everyday life and farming looked like around 1850.

The museum extends across roughly 1,500 square metres, offering a detailed picture of how ordinary people lived and worked during that period. The building itself is also part of the experience, particularly its distinctive bay window, which fits into the streetscape of the old town.

St. George’s Abbey

St. George’s Abbey, known locally as Kloster St. Georgen, is one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes in Switzerland. The Benedictine abbey was founded at the beginning of the eleventh century, with Saint George and Cyril of Gortyna as its patron saints.

The monastery and the town developed together, and the abbey played an important role in Stein am Rhein for centuries. Founded in the Romanesque period, the complex was rebuilt and expanded several times between the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. These changes created the layered medieval architecture visible today.

The abbey was dissolved during the Reformation in 1525. The former monastery now houses the Kloster Museum St. Georgen, a historical museum dedicated to the site’s past. The Gottfried Keller Foundation has owned the complex since 1926 and has helped preserve it.

St. Johann church

St. Johann church, also called Kirche St. Johann auf Burg, is another notable landmark in Stein am Rhein. Its name reflects the connection between the church and the area’s castle heritage. Like the town’s other churches, it contributes to the mix of religious and medieval landmarks found throughout the centre.

Walk along the Rhine

Stein am Rhein’s appeal is not limited to its buildings. The town’s setting beside the Rhine, close to Lake Constance, gives the old centre a calm waterfront atmosphere. Gardens, water and the surrounding hills complement the historic streets and make the town especially enjoyable to explore at walking pace.

The combination of medieval heritage and riverside scenery makes Stein am Rhein a compact destination for travellers looking for a self-guided visit in Switzerland. It can also fit naturally into a broader itinerary that includes Zürich or other Swiss destinations such as Lucerne.
