Fort Verde State Historic Park

Fort Verde State Historic Park preserves a small section of a fort from the Apache Wars era. The site gives visitors a glimpse of how the fort appeared in the 1880s and provides a direct connection to this period of regional history.

The park was established in 1970 to preserve parts of Fort Verde. In 1971, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. For anyone interested in the historical side of Camp Verde, it is one of the town’s key places to visit.

Clear Creek Church

A few miles southeast of Camp Verde, Clear Creek Road leads to Clear Creek Church, a small limestone building listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Its walls were built between 1898 and 1903 from limestone blocks taken from Hayfield Wash on the Middle Verde River.

The building has a simple plan measuring about 40 by 25 feet, topped by a high gable roof. For many years, it was Camp Verde’s only church. In 1913, it became the community’s one-room schoolhouse, before being abandoned in 1946 and later cared for by the Camp Verde Historical Society.

There is also a small detail built into the church’s foundation. A Bible and a five-dollar gold piece were placed inside the cornerstone during construction. The gold piece was chiseled out in the 1920s, but the story remains part of the building’s history.
