What to See in Buena Vista

Buena Vista Downtown Historic District

The Buena Vista Downtown Historic District is the natural place to begin exploring the city. It brings together 38 contributing buildings and one contributing structure, preserving the character of the central business district.

Most of the buildings are compact one- or two-story masonry structures. The earliest date from 1889 and 1890, including the Advocate Building from 1889 and the Buena Vista Company Building from 1890. Other landmarks include the Peoples Bank of Buena Vista, built in 1907; the Dickinson Building, dating to about 1907; the Buena Vista Masonic Building from about 1910; and the Valley Steam Laundry Building from about 1905.

The district also includes later buildings that show how the center continued to develop: the Buena Vista Post Office from 1930, Royer’s Restaurant from about 1940, and the Buena Vista War Memorial Building from 1954.

Old Courthouse

The Old Courthouse, also known as the Buena Vista Land Company building, is one of the most notable landmarks in the historic center. Built in 1890, this two-and-a-half-story brick building is distinguished by its mansard roof and Second Empire style.

Its original uses reflected the many services a growing community needed. The building contained the Treasurer’s Office, Mayor’s Office, Clerk of Court, a courtroom, attorneys’ offices and a telephone exchange. The local Odd Fellows’ Lodge also met there. Since 1971, it has housed the local public library, giving the former courthouse an enduring role in community life.

Southern Seminary Main Building

Today, the Southern Seminary Main Building serves as Main Hall of Southern Virginia University. It began in 1890 as the Hotel Buena Vista and is an eye-catching example of eclectic Queen Anne and French Renaissance architecture.

Its features include a steep slate-covered gable roof, round towers, layered wooden galleries and Palladian windows. Look up at the towers to see their conical and domical roofs. The building became known as the Southern Seminary Main Building by 1907, after three campuses of the school were consolidated. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Southern Virginia University

Southern Virginia University has a history that goes back to 1867, when it began as a school for girls. It is now a private, four-year, coeducational liberal arts college with a focus on arts and sciences.

The university is classified as a very small, bachelor’s-degree-only institution. Its compact character contributes to Buena Vista’s identity as a small city with an established academic presence.

Glen Maury

Just outside Buena Vista, Glen Maury is a historic Virginia home also known as Paxton Place and Elisha Paxton’s house. Built between 1829 and 1832, it offers a glimpse into the area’s architectural past.

The house is a two-and-a-half-story brick dwelling set on a high basement made from native stone. A two-story rear ell extends behind the main structure. At the front, a two-story Classical Revival portico in the Doric order gives the entrance a formal appearance, with paired columns and workmanship described as somewhat crude.

On the river side, a five-bay, two-story verandah adds a later architectural layer. Added around 1900, it features turned wooden posts and simple brackets. Glen Maury was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Glen Maury Park

A short distance from the city, Glen Maury Park provides an open, peaceful setting in Rockbridge County. Forested surroundings and nearby hills give the park a distinctly rural character, making it a pleasant complement to Buena Vista’s historic streets.

Laurel Park

Laurel Park is another quiet park in Rockbridge County, set among wooded hills and open country. Deciduous forest covers much of the surrounding area, while the landscape rises toward the southeast and becomes flatter to the northwest.

The park stands 393 meters above sea level. Its combination of open land, wooded surroundings and changing terrain makes it a useful stop for experiencing the landscape around Buena Vista.

Chalk Mine Run

Chalk Mine Run is a natural watercourse within the City of Buena Vista. It forms part of the James River watershed and offers a simple reminder of the waterways shaping the wider area.

Cedar Ridge and Mineral Ridge

Cedar Ridge is a ridge in the eastern part of Buena Vista, while Mineral Ridge lies in Rockbridge County. Both provide elevated landscapes within the surrounding countryside.

Mineral Ridge is about 240 kilometers southwest of Washington, D.C., as is the wider Buena Vista area. These ridges add a sense of elevation and open space to a visit focused otherwise on the downtown district.
