Key Places to Visit in Clearwater

Flag Building

The Flag Building, once called the Super Power Building, stands in downtown Clearwater. Owned by the Church of Scientology, it serves as the spiritual headquarters of their Flag Service Organization. Construction started in 1998 and the building opened to the public on November 17, 2013, after years of work focused on the Super Power Rundown program.

Bilheimer Capitol Theatre

The historic Capitol Theatre opened in 1921 and has hosted movies, vaudeville, and live performances ever since. After a period of financial difficulty it was renamed the Royalty Theatre, then restored between 1999 and 2000. The City of Clearwater acquired the venue in 2008, and an eleven‑million‑dollar renovation completed in 2013 led to its reopening in 2014 to strong acclaim. The theatre now seats up to 750 guests.

Church of the Ascension

Located in the Harbor Oaks Residential District, this Episcopal church is noted for its Gothic‑style architecture. The current building dates to around 1925 and houses an organ and twenty‑eight stained‑glass windows, the oldest of which originates from 1895. Windows depict the Ascension of Jesus, the Ten Commandments, the Good Shepherd, and the Lost Son, with a large Ascension window positioned above the altar. The church’s tower holds the Betty Jane Dimmitt Memorial Carillon—seventy‑five feet (twenty‑three meters) tall with forty‑nine bells, one of only four such carillons in Florida. A special “war window” features a candle lit in remembrance of those involved in the Iraq war.

Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church

Also known as Hope Henry AME Church, this historic site sits at 600 Jones Street in Pinellas County. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on February 3, 2000, recognizing its importance as a local landmark and place of worship.

Ruth Eckerd Hall

Part of the Richard B. Baumgardner Center for the Performing Arts, Ruth Eckerd Hall covers 73,000 square feet. Its auditorium provides 2,180 seats arranged in continental seating, meaning there is no central aisle. The venue hosts a range of concerts, theatrical productions, and community events throughout the year.
