What to See in Ouray

Explore Ouray’s historic main street

Ouray began as a mining town in the mid-1870s, when more than thirty mines operated nearby. The town became the administrative center of Ouray County in 1877 and received city rights on March 24, 1884.

Today, the main street takes you through a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of its buildings date from the late nineteenth century, giving the center a strong sense of its mining-town past. Among the landmarks are the Ouray County Courthouse, the St. Elmo Hotel, St. Joseph’s Miners Hospital, the Western Hotel, Wright’s Opera House, Ouray City Hall, the Walsh Library, and the Beaumont Hotel.

Ouray is the county seat of Ouray County and had a population of 898 in the 2020 census. At its peak, the town had 2,534 residents, recorded in the 1890 census.

Visit Wright’s Opera House

At 472 Main Street, Wright’s Opera House is one of the most distinctive buildings in Ouray’s historic district. Also known as Wright’s Hall, it was built in 1888 and remains a contributing property on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building has served several purposes over time. It began as a theater, then became a space for presentations and community events after the mining bust and the end of performances. From 1979 to 1996, it housed the San Juan Odyssey, a multimedia presentation narrated by future Ouray mayor Bill Fries. Around 2000, it was converted into a movie theater, which operated until late 2006.

Understand Ouray’s railway history

Transportation was important to Ouray’s development as a mining town. A railway built by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway reached the town on December 21, 1887.

That connection forms part of the story behind Ouray’s growth in the late nineteenth century. As you walk through the center, the historic buildings and former civic and commercial landmarks help connect the town’s present-day appearance with the period when mining and railway access shaped its future.

Take in the mountain setting

Ouray stands at an elevation of 2,375 meters, or 7,792 feet, in a valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The alpine landscape is central to the town’s identity and explains the nickname “Switzerland of America.”

The surrounding scenery changes from steep mountain views to more open countryside as you explore Ouray County. The town’s compact setting makes it possible to combine its natural backdrop with a walk through the historic center rather than treating them as separate experiences.

Explore Ridgway and the northern San Juan Mountains

Ridgway lies in a valley among the northern San Juan Mountains, with the Uncompahgre River running through it. Forested mountains and cliffs rise to the south, east, and northeast.

The town began as a railroad stop and was established on April 2, 1891. Ridgway and the surrounding area have also appeared in films, including True Grit, How the West Was Won, and Tribute to a Bad Man. One small local detail is especially easy to spot: the intersection of Highways 550 and 62 has the only stoplight in Ouray County.

Notice Loghill Village’s rural landscape

Loghill Village offers a different view of Ouray County. This small census-designated place is characterized by rolling, sparsely populated hill country and open grassland.

Its population was 617 in the 2020 United States Census, compared with 521 in 2010 and 311 in 2000. The open landscape provides a contrast to Ouray’s enclosed mountain valley and historic town center.
