What to See in Galesburg

Galesburg Railroad Museum

Galesburg’s railroad story comes together at the Galesburg Railroad Museum. Its collection includes historic rail cars, photographs, documents, and objects donated by railroad workers and their families.

Among the exhibits are CB&Q locomotive number 3006, the Pullman car Meath, and a Railway Express combination mail and baggage car. A CB&Q Burlington Route way car adds another perspective on railroad travel and railway work. For anyone interested in how transportation shaped the city, this is one of the essential things to do in Galesburg.

James B. Stockdale Museum

The James B. Stockdale Museum, also known as the Stockdale Military Museum, tells the story of James Bond Stockdale, a U.S. Navy aviator and one of the country’s most highly decorated naval officers.

Stockdale was born in 1923 and began his career in carrier aviation before reaching the highest levels of naval leadership. He was shot down over North Vietnam on September 9, 1965, while flying an A-4 Skyhawk from the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Held captive in Hanoi for more than seven years, he remained the most senior naval officer held there until his release on February 12, 1973. He received the Medal of Honor in 1976.

Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum Theatre on Kellogg Street is one of downtown Galesburg’s historic landmarks. It originally opened in August 1916 and remains part of the city’s architectural and cultural character.

The theatre sits among several places connected with Galesburg’s history, including the Carl Sandburg sites and the Galesburg Railroad Museum. Its historic setting makes it a natural stop while exploring downtown.

Carl Sandburg State Historic Site

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site preserves the place where author Carl Sandburg was born and spent his boyhood. Its central building is the cottage where Sandburg was born, accompanied by a visitor center and museum dedicated to his life and work.

The site also includes a museum shop and a small theatre. Nearby, a rock marks the place where Sandburg and his wife, Lilian, are buried. The historic site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Division.

The site closed to visitors in 2008 because of state budget cuts and reopened in April 2009 after the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency was merged with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. That history is part of the site’s story, but the main draw remains its direct connection with Sandburg’s early life.

Carl Sandburg Birthplace Historic Site

The Carl Sandburg Birthplace Historic Site is set in Illinois’s Knox County, in a broad and mostly flat landscape. Farmland extends across much of the surrounding area, giving the site an open setting that contrasts with the buildings and streets of Galesburg.

Together with the state historic site, it offers a way to connect Sandburg’s literary legacy with the landscape where his early life began.

Meetinghouse of the Central Congregational Church

At Central Square, the Meetinghouse of the Central Congregational Church stands out for its richly detailed stone exterior. Designed by Galesburg architect C. E. Gottschalk in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the building uses brown sandstone imported from Marquette, Michigan.

Its many turrets and bell tower, topped by a pyramidal roof, give the church a distinctive silhouette. Above the entrance, a twenty-two-foot-wide stained-glass rose window forms the building’s most striking detail.

The meetinghouse was constructed between 1897 and 1898 for a united Congregational congregation. Two Congregational churches had formed in Galesburg during the 1850s after separating from the town’s Presbyterian church. They joined together in 1895, after one of the churches began to collapse during a service.

The building preserves reminders of that union. Its bell was made from the bells used by the two earlier Congregational churches, and in 1912 the church acquired another distinctive feature connected with its history.
