The present building dates from 1858 and replaced an earlier brick and stone light built at the edge of Lake Michigan in 1837. It was the second lighthouse at this location and later became the predecessor to the Michigan City East Light.

The lighthouse was remodeled in 1904. At that time, its lantern, lens, and light were moved to the new light at the end of the extended pier. A fourth-order Fresnel lens remains on display inside, offering a close look at the equipment once used to guide ships.

First Congregational Church of Michigan City

First Congregational Church of Michigan City is another important local landmark. The church was built between 1880 and 1881 in a combination of Romanesque and Tudor Revival styles. Those two architectural traditions give the building a distinctive appearance and a strong connection to the city’s late-nineteenth-century history.

The church was rebuilt between 1908 and 1909 after a fire, adding another chapter to the story of this longstanding building. Its survival and reconstruction make it a worthwhile stop for visitors interested in Michigan City’s architecture and local heritage.
