Things to Do in Nha Trang: Two Landmarks to See Beyond the Beach

Nha Trang is a coastal city in Vietnam known for its beaches, seafood, and lively resort atmosphere. Beyond the shoreline, its historic cathedral and museum dedicated to scientist Alexandre Yersin offer two quieter ways to discover the city’s religious heritage and scientific history. Neywo has a free audio guide for Nha Trang with two narrated places, available in 11 languages.

What to See in Nha Trang

Christ the King Cathedral

Christ the King Cathedral is one of Nha Trang’s best-known Catholic landmarks. It is also called Nha Trang Cathedral or Nhà thờ Núi, meaning Mountain Church, and serves as the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nha Trang.

The parish was founded in 1886 by French missionaries. The present church was built in 1928 in the Gothic Revival style and consecrated on 14 May 1933 under the title Christ the King. Its distinctive form is made up of strong geometric volumes that become smaller as they rise, ending in a cross atop the bell tower 38 metres above street level.

Inside, the stained-glass windows are among the cathedral’s most notable details. They depict saints such as Saint Joan of Arc and Saint John Vianney, along with scenes from the life of Jesus. The bell was blessed in 1934, and the bell tower was completed the following year.

The cathedral also reflects the development of the Catholic Church in the city. The Apostolic Vicariate of Nha Trang was established in 1957, and the Diocese of Nha Trang was created in 1960, when the church became its cathedral.

Yersin Museum

The Yersin Museum explores the life and work of Alexandre Yersin, a scientist who spent many years working in the region. It is housed in his former home, within the grounds of the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang.

The collection includes Yersin’s research equipment and letters. Together, these objects provide a personal perspective on his scientific work and everyday life, rather than presenting only the results of his discoveries.

The museum’s displays have captions in French, with English and Vietnamese translations. This makes it easier to follow the story of Yersin’s work while examining the objects in the collection.

More Ways to Experience Nha Trang

Nha Trang is more than its beachfront resort district. The city’s religious landmarks and museums reveal different sides of its history, while its food gives the coastal setting a strong local identity. Seafood features prominently in regional cuisine, including bún cá sứa, a noodle soup made with jellyfish, fish, herbs, and vegetables.

For a broader journey through Vietnam, Nha Trang can also be combined with cities such as Quy Nhon, Tuy Hòa, or Hội An.
