Dawson City Museum

The Dawson City Museum is a history museum located in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada.

Klondike River

The Klondike River flows into the Yukon River at Dawson City and gave its name to the gold rush; gold was first discovered in its tributaries in 1896, beginning the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896‑1898. The river rises in the Ogilvie Mountains, runs about 160  kilometres before joining the Yukon, and even appears in Jack London’s 1901 story A Relic of the Pliocene under the name Reindeer River.

Klondike Gold Rush

The Klondike Gold Rush drew an estimated 100,000 prospectors to the area between 1896 and 1898 after gold was found on August 16, 1896. News of the strike reached Seattle and San Francisco the following year, triggering a stampede. Dawson City became the rush’s heart, growing from roughly 500 inhabitants in 1896 to tens of thousands by the summer of 1898. The town’s wooden buildings faced fires, high prices, epidemics and isolation, yet wealthy prospectors spent freely in saloons and gambling halls. The boom faded in 1899 when gold was discovered near Nome, and production later peaked in 1903 after heavier equipment was introduced.

Jack London Cabin

Jack London’s Cabin is a historic log cabin dating from 1897. The American writer lived there during the winter of 1897‑98, and his stay inspired works such as The Son of the Wolf, The Call of the Wild and White Fang. Replicas of the cabin exist at the Jack London Museum (founded 1965) and at Jack London Square in Oakland, California.

Palace Grand Theatre

Klondike (region)

The Klondike is the informal Yukon region centred on the river of the same name. Its name comes from the Hän word Tr’ondëk meaning “hammerstone water.” Gold mining has continued in the area apart from a pause in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church

St. Paul’s Anglican Church, built in 1902, is a distinctive wooden landmark with Carpenter Gothic features—a steeply pitched roof, pointed‑arch entrance through the belfry tower and narrow lancet windows. It served as the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Yukon until the diocesan see moved to Whitehorse in 1953 and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada on June 1, 1989.
