St Mary’s Cathedral
St Mary’s Cathedral stands to the west of Killarney, in County Kerry. It is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Kerry, also known at different times as the Diocese of Ardfert and Ahadoe.
The cathedral’s history reflects the long development of the diocese. From the middle of the sixteenth century until the early eighteenth century, it was led by apostolic vicars, with a brief interruption in the 1640s. Between 1720 and 1775, the bishops of Kerry lived in several places, including Dingle, Kilcummin, Tuogh, Listowel, and Tralee.
The diocesan seat was eventually established in Killarney by Bishop Francis Moylan, who lived from 1735 to 1815. Before the cathedral was built, a small chapel stood on Chapel Lane. Its baptismal font has been preserved in the cathedral’s present baptistery.
The idea for a cathedral came from Joseph O’Sullivan, parish priest of Dingle. He gained the support of Bishop Cornelius Egan and Valentine Browne, the second Earl of Kenmare and a Catholic landowner in the area.
