What to See in Sligo

The main sights on this walk are concentrated around Sligo town. Together, they reveal the town’s religious heritage, cultural life, and connection with County Sligo’s history.

Wesley Chapel

Wesley Chapel is one of the town’s religious landmarks. It offers a brief introduction to Sligo’s history of worship before the route continues towards some of its larger churches.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands on Temple Street and is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Elphin. Its Romanesque character and tall central tower make it one of Sligo’s most distinctive buildings.

Bishop Laurence Gillooly developed the cathedral after becoming Bishop of Elphin in 1858. He considered the existing St John’s Parish Chapel no longer sufficient for the diocese, and the new cathedral opened for worship on 26 July 1874 in a ceremony led by Cardinal Paul Cullen of Dublin.

The building follows a Normano-Romano-Byzantine style and has a basilica layout. At the west end, its square tower rises to 70 metres and is topped by a pyramid-shaped roof, with supporting turrets on either side. The interior can seat around 1,400 people.

St John the Baptist Cathedral

Known as Sligo Cathedral, St John the Baptist Cathedral is also formally called the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin and St John the Baptist. It is the oldest building still in continuous use in Sligo, making it an important stop for anyone interested in the town’s religious heritage.

Sligo Presbyterian Church

Sligo Presbyterian Church is another of the town’s places of worship. Alongside the other churches on the route, it shows the variety of religious buildings found within Sligo.

Yeats Memorial Building

The Yeats Memorial Building is a Sligo landmark identified as a bank in the town. Its name places it within the cultural setting associated with Sligo and the area’s connection with poet W. B. Yeats.

Sligo County Museum

Housed in a former manse on Stephen Street, Sligo County Museum is devoted to the history of County Sligo. Its Irish name is MĂşsaem Chontae Shligigh, and its focus is the story and history of the county.

The museum adds historical context to a walk through the town, balancing the churches and cultural venues with a place dedicated to the wider area.

The Model Arts and Niland Gallery, also known as the Model Niland Gallery, is a contemporary arts centre and gallery space in Sligo. It brings a creative dimension to the walk and provides a contrast with the town’s older religious buildings.

Calry Parish Church

Also known as Calry Church, Calry Parish Church is a local place of worship in Sligo. It forms part of the route’s collection of churches and offers another perspective on the town’s religious character.

St Anne’s Parish Church

St Anne’s Parish Church is a local parish church in Sligo. It is one of several religious landmarks that can be visited during the walk through the town.

St Columba’s Church

St Columba’s Church is another of Sligo’s churches. It provides a short pause on the route and contributes to the variety of religious landmarks in the town.

Hawk’s Well Theatre

Hawk’s Well Theatre is an important part of Sligo’s cultural life and stands beside the town’s tourist office. It opened on 12 January 1982 as the first purpose-built theatre in rural Ireland, marking a notable moment for the region.

Sligo County Library

Sligo County Library is another stop in County Sligo. Together with the museum, gallery, and theatre, it forms part of the town’s cultural landscape.
