Sagiridai

Sagiridai is an observation deck in the Kawakami Nonokusa area of Yufuin Town. Its position makes it a useful stop for taking in the wider landscape of Oita Prefecture and seeing the natural setting around Yufu from above.

Unaguhime Shrine

Bungo Province

Yufu lies in what was once the heart of Bungo Province, an ancient province that covered most of what is now Ōita Prefecture. Its territory extended across eastern Kyūshū from the mountains to the coast, while the northern cities of Nakatsu and Usa belonged to neighboring Buzen Province.

Bungo was formed in the late seventh century when Toyo Province was divided into northern and southern parts. The name Toyo means “abundant” or “rich,” and Bungo remained an important region through the samurai era, the rise and fall of the Ōtomo clan, and the Edo period.

The old province was abolished in 1872, when the Meiji government replaced the former provincial system with modern prefectures. Knowing this history adds another layer to a walk through Yufu: the landscape is not only scenic, but also part of a region shaped by centuries of political and cultural change.
