What to See in Valkenburg

Valkenburg Castle

Begin with Valkenburg Castle, the dramatic ruin rising above the town on the Heunsberg. Built in 1115 as the stronghold of the lords of Valkenburg, it is the only castle in the Netherlands built on a hill. Its wooden fortifications were rebuilt in stone over the centuries, and by the fourteenth century the site had developed into a fortified settlement with a city wall, defence towers, six gateways and moats.

The castle was destroyed in 1672 but never completely demolished. Its surviving towers and walls still offer views across the Geul valley, while escape tunnels and the Kasteelgroeve cave system beneath the site add an underground dimension to the visit.

Den Halder Castle and the Old Town Walls

Den Halder Castle stands directly beside the Geul in the centre of Valkenburg. Its oldest section is a massive square medieval defence tower, built from local marble and once incorporated into the town’s fortifications. The later pointed roof and cross-shaped windows help distinguish the old tower from the newer parts of the building.

In nearby Halderpark, part of the old city wall and another tower remain visible. Valkenburg’s original walls also survive through two gates: the Berkelpoort toward Neerhem and the Grendelpoort toward Maastricht. Together, these landmarks make the old town a rewarding place to explore on foot.

H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara

The H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara church, known locally as the Old Church of Valkenburg, occupies a central position near the Geul. Its architecture combines Romanesque, Gothic and Neo-Gothic elements, and the church is protected as a national heritage site.

The area beside the church contains several small monuments. The Nicolaas-perroen is a shrine to Saint Nicholas of Myra, while the nearby Sacred Heart statue, Mariakapel and Vredesvlam form a quiet cluster of religious and commemorative landmarks close to the river and the old Geulpoort.

Museum Valkenburg

Museum Valkenburg is housed in a former town hall and post office in the town centre. The building itself is a national heritage site, while the museum’s collection explores the geology, Roman and medieval archaeology, and local history of the region.

The museum also collects art from Limburg and presents changing exhibitions. Its entire organization is run by volunteers, reflecting the local commitment to preserving Valkenburg’s heritage.

The Roman Catacombs

The Roman Catacombs offer one of Valkenburg’s most unusual experiences. The underground passages are carved into local limestone and reproduce parts of the famous catacombs of Rome. Architect Pierre Cuypers led the project, which was completed in 1913.

The original entrance is a small classical limestone building on Plenkertstraat. The site lies near the former De Leeuw brewery, the flint mines and the geological monument at the end of Plenkertweg, with the Polferbos forest above the quarry.

Castle Oost

East of Valkenburg, Castle Oost is a neo-classical country house beside the Geul. The national monument is built from local marlstone and surrounded by a formal garden and landscaped park. Its symmetrical façade has a central projection with a triangular pediment, a coat of arms, a balcony and a broad entrance staircase.

On the park side, a semi-circular projection and a staircase lead down toward the castle garden and the river. One western wing has a weather vane marked with the year 1775.

Castle Genhoes and Oud-Valkenburg

Castle Genhoes lies beside the Geul in Oud-Valkenburg, behind the village parish church. The medieval castle complex and its farmstead form part of the protected scenic area of Oud-Valkenburg and are national monuments.

The site was the ancestral seat of the lords of Valkenburg. The origins of the present town most likely lie here, while the earliest written mention of Valkenburg appears in a charter dated 15 February 1041, under the name Falchenberch.

Johannes de Doperkerk

The Johannes de Doperkerk, or Church of St. John the Baptist, is in Oud-Valkenburg. It is one of the oldest churches in the region and has been a protected national monument since 1967. The Roman Catholic parish church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and has also honoured Saint Rita of Cascia since 1959.

Sint-Gerlachuskerk and the Gerlachusputje

In Houthem-Sint Gerlach, the Sint-Gerlachuskerk is a Baroque church dedicated to Saint Gerlach of Houthem. It was originally the monastery church of a Norbertine convent and was built between 1720 and 1728 in the Mosan Baroque style. Red-painted brick, marble decoration, a statue of Saint Gerlach and an onion dome give the exterior a distinctive character.

Nearby, the Gerlachusputje is a small historic well on the Château St. Gerlach estate, at the edge of the Ingendael nature area. A well associated with Saint Gerlachus was mentioned around 1227, and local tradition connects the spring with the saint. The site later became associated with pilgrimage and healing.

Other Villages and Churches

The wider Valkenburg area offers more small heritage stops. The Sint-Mauritiuskerk stands on a church hill in Schin op Geul, surrounded by a cemetery and a retaining wall made from local limestone. The Sint-Rozakerk in Sibbe is a national heritage church dedicated to Saint Rosa, while the Sibberhuuske, also called the Villartshof, is a historic castle farm on the edge of the village.

The Kloosterkerk in Valkenburg reflects the town’s Protestant heritage, and the Regina Pacis Priory on the road between Valkenburg and Oud-Valkenburg has been home to Benedictine sisters since it was built in 1958. These places show how much of the area’s history lies beyond the central castle and town walls.
