What to See in Oceanside

California Surf Museum

A few steps from Oceanside Pier, the California Surf Museum tells the history and culture of surfing through surfboards, photographs, art, equipment, magazines, and videos. Its permanent surfboard timeline follows the evolution of board design from wooden boards used in the early 1900s to modern boards.

Rotating exhibitions add different perspectives to the collection. One of the museum’s most striking displays is dedicated to Bethany Hamilton. It includes the surfboard she was riding when she lost an arm in a shark attack off the coast of Hawaii, showing the large missing section of the board. The display also includes the bathing suit she was wearing, donated by ocean photographer Aaron Chang.

The museum began in Encinitas in 1986, later moved to Pacific Beach, and settled in Oceanside in 1991. Its current home is a 5,100-square-foot building in downtown Oceanside and is the museum’s third location in the city.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is a historic mission church and was once the center of a vast mission complex. Its history is closely connected with the Luiseño people.

At its height, the mission covered almost 950,400 acres, including its agricultural lands, making it the largest of California’s missions. Several outposts operated under its supervision, including San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, established in 1816, and Las Flores Estancia, established in 1823.

For visitors interested in the history of California, the mission offers an important perspective on the state’s mission-era past and the communities connected with it.

Oceanside Museum of Art

The Oceanside Museum of Art is a center for contemporary art from Southern California. Its changing exhibitions include painting, sculpture, furniture, art quilts, fiber design, and glass.

The museum began holding exhibitions in 1995, and its dedicated facility opened on October 6, 1997. The building occupies two structures designed by Southern California modernist architects Irving Gill and Frederick Fisher. Together, they provide 20,020 square feet of space, including 9,128 square feet devoted to galleries.

A visit can include more than viewing exhibitions. The museum’s programs include classes, lectures, tours, concerts, films, and other events. It also organizes chartered travel to cultural art exhibitions elsewhere. The museum typically presents more than a dozen modern and contemporary exhibitions each year, including exhibitions at other community locations.
