The building itself is part of the visit. Viggo Brandt-Erichsen, an internationally known painter and sculptor, and his wife, Martha Mott, a painter and art teacher, built the house in 1950. Its design was inspired by the large farmhouses of eighteenth-century Jutland in Denmark. After renovation, the building opened to the public in May 1988.

Scandinavian details appear throughout the house, including ornamental wrought iron, hand-painted panels and a carved wooden front door. Inside, a traditional Danish kitchen has pine floors, countertops and tables decorated with green paint and stencilled flowers.

The museum’s name means “Elves’ Hill,” referring to the Danish folk play Elverhøj, first performed in 1828. In the story, a king visits dancing wood spirits and forest friends at night.
