Things to do in Venice, Florida

Venice, Florida, is a Gulf Coast city with a distinctive religious history and a strong local arts scene. Two places offer a useful introduction to its identity: Epiphany Cathedral, the seat of the Diocese of Venice, and Venice Theatre, a community gathering place for the performing arts. Neywo also has a free audio guide for Venice, with two narrated places available in 11 languages.

What to see in Venice

Visit Epiphany Cathedral

Epiphany Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Venice and the central church of the Diocese of Venice. Its story began in 1935, when the parish started as a mission station connected to Saint Martha’s Parish in nearby Sarasota.

The mission was partly created because teachers and students at the Kentucky Military Institute faced a 36-mile round trip to attend Mass in Sarasota. Its first Mass took place in the Gulf Theater, with just 20 people present.

The church became a cathedral in 1984, when Blessed John Paul II established the Diocese of Venice on June 16. Two years later, the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Venice was reestablished from Epiphany Cathedral, reflecting the cathedral’s continuing role in the local Catholic community.

For visitors interested in the history of Venice, Epiphany Cathedral provides a clear example of how the city’s religious institutions developed alongside its community.

See a performance at Venice Theatre

Venice Theatre is a community theatre and a local gathering place for the performing arts. It has been part of the Venice community for years, giving the city a cultural venue beyond its religious and historic sites.

A visit here adds a different dimension to exploring Venice: instead of simply passing through the city’s streets, you can experience one of the places where local artistic life takes place.
