Things to do in Roswell, New Mexico: UFOs, Art and the Night Sky

Looking for things to do in Roswell? A free Neywo audio guide for Roswell tells the stories of 3 narrated places as you reach them.

What to see in Roswell

International UFO Museum and Research Center

The International UFO Museum and Research Center is one of Roswell’s most distinctive attractions. It occupies a former 1930s movie theater and focuses on the history of UFO encounters, with particular attention to the 1947 Roswell incident.

The story began when rancher W. W. “Mack” Brazel discovered metal debris outside Roswell, near a giant trench said to stretch for hundreds of feet. The museum presents different theories about what happened and considers the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Its exhibits cover extraterrestrials, flying saucers, abductions, the UFO phenomenon and supposed crop circles. The museum also examines reported encounters from the United States and other parts of the world. It opened in September 1991 as a nonprofit educational organization and includes an extensive UFO library and a meeting room.

Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art

The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, also known as AMoCA, offers a different view of Roswell’s cultural life. Founded in 1994, it grew out of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program.

The museum displays contemporary work by artists who previously took part in that program. It is a place to encounter art connected with Roswell’s creative community, providing a contrast to the city’s UFO-focused attractions.

Roswell Museum and Art Center

The Roswell Museum and Art Center brings together art, regional history and the exploration of the night sky. Founded in 1936, the museum focuses on the art and history of the American Southwest and includes the Robert H. Goddard laboratory.

The museum is also home to the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium. Created in 1968 through a joint initiative between the museum and the Roswell Independent School District, it was once considered the largest planetarium in New Mexico.

Its system can reproduce the night sky as seen from any point on Earth, while its full-dome digital theater uses Digistar 6 programming. The result is a destination where visitors can explore both the region’s cultural heritage and the science associated with space.
