What to See in Mataram

Pura Meru

Pura Meru is one of the most important Hindu religious sites in Lombok. Located in Cakranegara, within Mataram, this Balinese Hindu temple was built in 1720 by Balinese Hindus during the rule of King Anak Agung Made Karang of Karangasem.

The temple is regarded as one of the oldest Balinese Hindu temples on Lombok and is also described as the island’s largest. It remains a sacred place, with festivals and special ceremonies still held there.

Pura Meru is arranged in three main sections. The western courtyard contains a wooden bell house called a kulkul. Its wooden instrument is used to gather people for religious ceremonies and cultural festivals. In the central courtyard, two large stepped buildings are used for arranging offerings during ceremonies and prayer.

The eastern courtyard is marked by three distinctive towers. The central tower has eleven levels of roofs, while the two towers beside it have nine. Together, the towers represent the universe and honor Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Taman Mayura

About two kilometres east of Mataram, Taman Mayura is a historic garden created as a royal palace complex. It was built in 1866 by Anak Agung Gde Ngurah Karangasem and was designed as a royal retreat for the rulers of Karangasem, rather than simply as an ornamental park.

The site offers a different perspective on Lombok’s history from the religious architecture of Pura Meru. Its layout reflects the role of the garden as part of a royal complex, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in the island’s former kingdoms and connections with Karangasem.

Sasak culture is present in Mataram not only through customs and traditions, but also through language. Sasak, also called Bahasa Sasak, is the mother tongue of the Sasak people, the ethnic majority on Lombok Island.

In formal settings and in writing, Sasak speakers use Indonesian, the national language. Sasak itself has no official status, although traditional texts written on lontar—palm leaves—are sometimes read aloud during particular customary ceremonies.

The language offers a way to understand the cultural landscape beyond individual monuments. Mataram is in West Nusa Tenggara, or Nusa Tenggara Barat, the Indonesian province occupying the western part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, with Bali to the west and East Nusa Tenggara to the east.
