Nederlands Hervormde kerk

The Nederlands Hervormde kerk is a long-standing landmark in Zevenaar’s town center. The Protestant church has served the local community for generations. Nearby, in Lobith, another Dutch Reformed church serves the village.

Sint-Andreaskerk

The Sint-Andreaskerk is a historic church in the heart of Zevenaar. Its central location makes it one of the town’s key religious landmarks and one of the places to include when walking through the historic center.

Huis Sevenaer

Huis Sevenaer is a historic building in Zevenaar. It is one of the town’s notable estates and forms part of the area’s collection of noble houses and manor sites.

Liemers Museum

The Liemers Museum presents the history and culture of the Liemers region. It is a useful stop for understanding the local area before visiting the surrounding villages, estates, and river landscapes.

Mathena

Mathena is a historic manor estate in Zevenaar. The current house dates from the sixteenth century and replaced an older medieval castle that once stood on the same site.

Sint Martinuskerk

The Sint Martinuskerk is a historic church building in Zevenaar. It is also included in the route following the Rhine towards the former municipality of Rijnwaarden.

Huis Kamphuizen

Huis Kamphuizen stands in Oud-Zevenaar. The house is private and still occupied by the family that has owned it for more than two centuries, but the grounds are open to the public.

The estate probably began in the fourteenth century with the Van Camphuysen family. It later passed to the Van Heerde family and, in 1815, to the De Nerée family. A moat surrounds the house, while late Gothic details remain visible in the stonework. The oldest foundations date from the fourteenth century, and much of the visible structure was built in the sixteenth century. The estate also contains old barrel-vaulted cellars and a wooden spiral staircase dated 1662.

Galluskerk in Angerlo

The Galluskerk, also known locally as the Sint-Galluskerk, stands at the center of Angerlo. The Protestant church has a history reaching back nearly a thousand years.

The original building was constructed in the eleventh or twelfth century with iron ore stones. A side aisle was added in the twelfth century, followed by a priest’s choir in the fourteenth century. The original Romanesque tower was replaced by a brick tower in 1766, but German troops destroyed that tower during the Second World War. Much of the church was rebuilt after the war, incorporating stones and wall fragments recovered by archaeologists from the ruins. An oak pulpit dating from 1690 survived inside.

Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Lathum

The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Lathum is a Protestant church serving the local community in the village of Lathum, within the municipality of Zevenaar. It adds a village setting to the area’s collection of historic religious buildings.

Huis Lathum

Huis Lathum is a nationally protected noble residence and a former havezate, the fortified manor house typical of this region. Its oldest sections date from the fifteenth century.

A coat-of-arms stone dated 1562 can be seen on the façade, offering a visible reminder of the family history associated with the house.

Huize Babberich

Huize Babberich is a country house southeast of Zevenaar, in the Liemers region. The estate occupies older grounds, while the present house has its origins in the late eighteenth century.

Helenakerk

The Helenakerk is another historic church building in Zevenaar. A little farther away, in Aerdt, stands another traditional church, the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk.

Rijnwaarden and the Rhine

Rijnwaarden is the area where the Rhine enters the Netherlands from Germany. The river continues through the landscape, carrying its alpine origins into the Dutch lowlands.

Until 2018, Rijnwaarden was a separate municipality covering almost forty-five square kilometres, including around eight square kilometres of water and a population of just over ten thousand people. On 1 January 2018, it merged with Zevenaar. The former municipality’s name refers to the shores of the Rhine, an apt description of this river landscape.

Tolhuis

Tolhuis is the site of a former seigneurial fortress in Lobith. The castle dominated the settlement for centuries, until the 1600s. Although the building has disappeared, the site recalls the strategic importance of the river and its settlements.

Ontmoetingskerk

The Ontmoetingskerk is a Protestant church in Zevenaar. It served as a Reformed church for generations before receiving its current name on 13 May 2001. Ontmoetingskerk means “Meeting Church.”
