Galle Fort and its ramparts

Galle Fort, also known as the Dutch Fort or the Ramparts of Galle, is the city’s defining landmark. The Portuguese first built the fort in 1588, and the Dutch extensively strengthened it from 1649 onwards. The result is a historic urban ensemble where European architecture meets South Asian traditions from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

The fort is still a living, multi-ethnic and multi-religious community rather than a museum frozen in time. Its walls and ramparts surround streets and buildings that have retained a polished appearance over more than four centuries. Sri Lanka’s Archaeological Department has carried out extensive reconstruction, including restoration after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

St. Mary’s Cathedral

Groote Kerk

All Saints’ Church

All Saints’ Church is an Anglican church on Church Road, within the historic fort area. Its presence reflects another chapter in Galle’s colonial history and forms part of the varied religious landscape inside the walls.

Meeran Jumma Mosque

Meeran Jumma Mosque, commonly known as the Galle Fort Mosque, stands within Galle Fort. The mosque is part of the fort’s historic setting in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province and is a reminder of the area’s multi-religious character.

National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum occupies a Dutch warehouse built in 1671 above the Old Gate. Its displays explore the maritime history and discoveries associated with Sri Lanka’s southern coastal region, including objects recovered through underwater exploration.

The collection includes maps, ropes, earthenware, beer cups, smoking pipes, barrels, agreements, cannons, and sailors’ footwear. Together, these objects offer a tangible view of the lives and trade connected with the sea.

The museum also has a more recent history. It survived the tsunami of 26 December 2004, although flooding damaged its exhibitions and most of the maritime archaeological artefacts were lost. The adjoining Maritime Archaeology Unit was destroyed. Financial support from the government of the Netherlands through the Sri Lanka and Netherlands Cultural Co-operation Program helped fund reconstruction, and the museum reopened after three years of work. A separate Galle National Maritime Archaeology Museum opened in 2010 with Dutch assistance.

National Museum of Galle

The National Museum of Galle is housed in one of the fort’s oldest buildings, a single-storey Dutch colonnaded structure dating from 1656. It was originally built as the commissariat store for the Dutch garrison and later served as a billiards room for the adjoining New Oriental Hotel, now known as the Amangalla Hotel. Following renovation by the Department of National Museums, it opened as a museum on 31 March 1986.

Its collections cover the Portuguese, Dutch, and British periods, as well as the traditional crafts and wider history of the region. The first gallery focuses on local cottage industries, with displays of turtle-shell jewellery, Beeralu lace weaving, and traditional wooden masks. Other objects include pottery fragments, clay figures, shell objects, metalwork, old jewellery, beads, and Buddhist-related artefacts recovered from excavations in the Southern Province.

The second gallery turns to the Dutch period, displaying furniture and weaponry that give a more direct sense of life inside the fort during that era.
