Bandaranaike International Airport

Bandaranaike International Airport is Sri Lanka’s main international gateway and serves the Negombo area. It is also commonly known as Colombo International Airport and locally as Katunayake Airport.

The airport commemorates former Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, who lived from 1899 to 1959. It is administered by Airport and Aviation Services, Sri Lanka, and serves as a hub for SriLankan Airlines, Fitsair and the domestic carrier Cinnamon Air. Alongside international flights, it supports domestic air travel, making it an important starting point for journeys across Sri Lanka.

St. Sebastian’s Church

St. Sebastian’s Church, also known as St. Sebastian’s Church in Wellaweediya, is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Negombo. The church was established in 1946.

Its design follows the Gothic Revival tradition and is architecturally based on Reims Cathedral in France. This gives the building a distinctive historic character and makes it one of the city’s notable landmarks.

Saint Stephen’s Church

Saint Stephen’s Church represents Negombo’s Anglican history. The church was consecrated on 31 July 1880 in a ceremony attended by worshippers, including several Wesleyans.

The occasion included a service in the Sinhalese language. A Sinhalese woman was baptised, sponsored by two English women—an episode that forms part of the church’s early history and reflects the city’s connections between different communities.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kandawala

Our Lady of Sorrows Church is also known as Kandawala Church or Kandawala Palliya. This Roman Catholic church is located in Kandawala and belongs to the Archdiocese of Colombo.

Kandawala Parish has a long tradition of hosting Passion Plays. The best known is Yagaya, which gives the parish a strong connection with religious storytelling and local community tradition.

St. Sebastian’s Church, Katuwapitiya

St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya is another Roman Catholic church belonging to the Archdiocese of Colombo. It is also known by local names in Sinhala and Tamil, reflecting its place within the community.

Together with St. Mary’s Church and St. Sebastian’s Church in Wellaweediya, it helps show the breadth of Negombo’s Catholic heritage.

Walisinghe Harischandra Museum

The Walisinghe Harischandra Museum is a biographical museum dedicated to one of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist revivalists, social reformers and writers. It is housed in Mahagedara, his former residence.

Established in 1996, the museum was initially managed by the Department of Museums. On 24 June 2011, the residence was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, and it is managed by the Walisinghe Harischandra Cultural Centre.

The collection includes furniture, books, diaries and personal belongings used by Harischandra, along with local objects and artefacts from his era. The museum therefore connects one person’s life with a broader view of the period in which he lived.
