Croatian Apoxyomenos

The Apoksiomen Museum in Mali Lošinj houses the Croatian Apoxyomenos, a bronze statue of an athlete cleaning sweat with a strigil. Discovered underwater near the islet of Vele Orjule in 1996 and restored after 1999, it went on public display in 2006. At about 192 cm tall, it is regarded as the most complete of the eight known Apoxyomenos statues, with scholarly estimates placing its origin anywhere from the second or first century BC to the first or second century AD.

Lighthouse Murtar

Further west on Lošinj lies Lighthouse Murtar (Svjetionik Otok Murtar) on Murtar Island. Operated by Plovput, the Croatian government’s maritime company, it remains an active lighthouse and a distinctive marker on the coast, offering views over the surrounding sea.

Zabodaski

A short distance offshore is the uninhabited islet of Zabodaski, administered by Mali Lošinj. Covering just 0.049 km² with a coastline of 0.81 km and a highest point of 20 m, it features a lighthouse that shows a red light with two flashes every six seconds, visible up to four nautical miles. The islet has no permanent residents, leaving only the rocky outcrop and its light.

Čikat

The sheltered bay of Čikat runs from the Church of Saint Nicholas in the south to Hotel Kredo in the north, protected from all winds except the westerly. Shaped by Austrian architect Dr. Alfred Edler von Manussi-Montesole and colleagues, its promenades bear their names. On a prominent cape stands the Church of the Annunciation (Annunziata), built in 1534 and enlarged in 1858, where Lošinj captains still sound their horns in greeting. The bay’s maritime past is echoed by three former shipyards and the conversion of Austrian nobles’ villas—such as Karolina, Diana, Saborka and Hotel Kredo—into hotels and residences.
