Key sights in Makarska
Spomenik revolucije (Monument to the Revolution)
The Spomenik revolucije stands as a distinctive landmark in Makarska. Visitors are encouraged to pause and take in the monument’s presence as a place to experience the town’s recent history.
Makarska Co‑catedral (Cathedral of Saint Mark the Evangelist)
At the top of Andrija Kačić Miošić Square rises the Baroque co‑catedral of Saint Mark the Evangelist. Construction began in 1700 under Bishop Nikola Bijanković and the building was consecrated in 1756 by Bishop Stjepan Blašković. When the Diocese of Makarska joined the Archdiocese of Split‑Makarska in 1828, the church became a co‑catedral. Its southwest façade shows two simple mullioned windows and a smaller Gothic‑style oculus. Inside, the altars retain notable details: the altar to the right of the entrance holds the bones of Saint Clement, the town’s patron saint, whose relics were brought from the Roman catacombs in 1725; the opposite altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is crowned by a small altar of Our Lady of the Rosary, featuring a wooden Virgin and Child painted by a master of the Byzantine school.
Queen of Peace parish church
The Queen of Peace parish church serves the local Catholic community. The parish was created in 1969 and the current building was completed in 2005, being consecrated on 30 May 2005 by Archbishop Marin Barišić of Split‑Makarska.
