Church of Saint Peter

Located on the right bank of the Cetina River in the village of Priko, the Church of Saint Peter is one of Omiš’s oldest monuments. Built as an Old Croatian church in the ninth or tenth century, it stands on the site of an earlier early Christian sanctuary, showing that the location has been sacred for many centuries. The church is first mentioned in written records from 1074, during the reign of King Slavac. Later, while the Republic of Poljica existed, a Glagolitic seminary was founded beside it in 1750, adding to its cultural importance.

Mirabella Fortress

Rising above the town on a steep slope of the Biokovo mountain range, Mirabella Fortress (also called Peovica or Tvrđava Peovica) is a small medieval stronghold dating from the thirteenth century, before the Venetians took control of the area. Constructed in a Romanesque style by the Kačić family, its position among the rocks made it both a refuge and a natural lookout for the Omiš pirates, who could retreat toward the mountain passes and the Cetina gorge. From the fortress visitors enjoy a striking view over Omiš and the bay. A local legend tells that during an Ottoman attack in 1537, the defenders created so much noise and gunfire that the attackers fled, believing the town’s forces were larger than they really were.
