What to see in Karlovac

Dubovac Castle

Overlooking the Kupa River, Dubovac Castle (also known as Stari grad Dubovac) stands on a prehistoric mound about 185 metres above sea level. Archaeological work has revealed layers from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, and the fortress probably dates from before the thirteenth century, with the first written mention in 1339. Its irregular, roughly square plan is strengthened by corner towers – three round towers two storeys high and a square defensive tower that rises two storeys higher. The wings between the towers once housed defensive, storage and living spaces.

City Museum Karlovac

Housed in a Baroque palace on Strossmayer Square, the City Museum Karlovac traces its origins to a 1904 council decision to preserve the city’s memories and antiquities. After a temporary start in the Magistrate’s offices and a hiatus between the world wars, professional work began in 1952 under Ivan Vrbanić, and the museum moved into its current Baroque curia‑type palace in 1953. Today it serves as an important cultural centre for Karlovac and the wider region.

Museum of Croatian War of Independence, Turanj

Located in the Turanj neighbourhood a little over four kilometres south of the historic centre, this museum opened in 2019 and is run by the Karlovac City Museum. It occupies an old Austrian military barracks and displays combat technology, including infantry weapons, though a permanent exhibition for the weapons collection is still pending.

Holy Father Nikolai Church (Saint Nicholas Cathedral)

The main Serbian Orthodox church in Karlovac, the Holy Father Nikolai Church on Ban Josip Jelačić Square was first built in 1787 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building was destroyed in 1993 and completely renovated in 2007, continuing to serve as a central place of worship for the Gornji Karlovac Diocese.

Franciscan Monastery of Karlovac and Church of the Holy Trinity

At Ban Josip Jelačić Square in the Zvijezda part of the historic centre, the Franciscan complex comprises a church with roots in the sixteenth century and a monastery dating from the seventeenth century. Both display Baroque features, and the church bell tower is a recognizable landmark of Karlovac. The site is a protected cultural monument and an important Roman Catholic sanctuary.

National Shrine of Saint Joseph

Beneath the old town of Dubovac, the National Shrine of Saint Joseph is a Croatian Catholic shrine and Minor Basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Karlovac, Karlovac County and Croatia. Construction began in 1968, the foundation stone was blessed in July 1968 by auxiliary bishop Franjo Kuharić, and the church was consecrated in September 1974 by Archbishop Franjo Šeper. The shrine received national status in April 1987, reflecting a tradition that dates back to 1687 when the Croatian Parliament proclaimed Saint Joseph protector of the Croatian kingdom.

Korana River

The Korana flows through central Croatia, briefly forms a natural border with Bosnia and Herzegovina for about twenty‑five kilometres, and then joins the Kupa River in Karlovac. Originating in the Plitvice Lakes area, it cuts through striking limestone canyons whose walls can rise around a hundred metres or more, sometimes covered with beech forest, sometimes bare, with caves appearing along the upper course. The limestone terrain also contributes to the river’s ongoing formation of new soil from plant material under certain natural conditions.

Mrežnica River

The Mrežnica is noted for its extraordinary succession of waterfalls and travertine barriers, creating a chain of clear pools, lakes and flowing water. Rising in the Kordun region near Slunj and travelling northward before meeting the Korana near Karlovac, the river is about sixty‑four kilometres long and contains ninety‑three travertine barriers. Its gentle gradient together with these barriers produces a modest flow and a varied course of calm stretches, lakes, waterfalls and falls, making it one of the most beautiful and intriguing waterways of the Croatian karst.

Karlovac County

Karlovac County’s administrative, political, economic, cultural and sporting centre is the city of Karlovac itself. The county originated with the six‑sided star fort built in the sixteenth century at the confluence of the four rivers during the Military Frontier and Ottoman conflicts. After becoming a free town in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the city grew thanks to roads linking the Pannonian Basin with the Adriatic Sea and water transport along the Kupa River. Karlovac County Day is celebrated on April twenty‑five, and the county’s patron saint is Saint Joseph, who is also the patron saint of the city.
