What to see in Ozalj

Ozalj Castle

Ozalj Castle, also known as Stari grad Ozalj, rises on a rocky spur above the Kupa River. First mentioned in 1244 when it was in royal hands, the fortress later passed to the Babonić family, then the Frankopans from 1398, and finally the Zrinskis from 1577 after the death of Stjepan the Fourth Frankopan Ozaljski. The entrance tower was commissioned in 1599 by Count Juraj the Fourth Zrinski. Until 1821 part of the approach bridge could be raised, and beneath it a small structure with openings for firearms defended the moat. Inside the complex you can see a square tower that likely served as an early defence point, a Gothic chapel, and the rectangular palace of Nikola Zrinski—known as the granary—which still displays Gothic details such as an inscription above its doorway dated 1556. Today the castle houses the town museum with archaeological, cultural, historical and ethnographic collections, and it is maintained by the Brethren of the Croatian Dragon, a cultural society that opens the site to visitors.

The Dobra River

The Dobra is a tributary of the Kupa that disappears underground before rejoining the surface. It begins from two sources near Bukov Vrh and the village of Gornja Dobra. Its upper stretch, called the Upper Dobra or Ogulin Dobra, flows toward Ogulin and vanishes at Đulin ponor (Đula’s Sinkhole). From there the water travels through the Đula and Medvedica cave system, which extends for more than sixteen kilometres, before re‑emerging near Gojak as a karst spring sometimes referred to as the Gojačka Dobra. After surfacing, the river continues as the Lower Dobra and joins the Kupa upstream from Karlovac. The Dobra’s flow is harnessed by the Gojak Hydroelectric Power Plant, and the Lešće Hydroelectric Plant began operating on the river in 2010. Two traditional watermills on the Dobra remain in use today.
