Things to do in Cosenza: a self-guided walk through Calabria’s historic city
Cosenza is a Calabrian city where a medieval historic centre, hilltop landmarks, museums and contemporary public art come together. The best things to do in Cosenza include exploring the old town, discovering its churches and collections, and following the city’s streets between Pancrazio Hill, the Duomo and the Busento. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Cosenza with 26 narrated places.
What to see in Cosenza
Normanno-Svevo Castle
Begin on Pancrazio Hill, 383 metres above sea level, where the Normanno-Svevo Castle stands above the city. Also known as Castello Svevo Cosenza, this medieval fortification is one of Cosenza’s most distinctive historic landmarks. Its elevated position gives the castle a strong presence over the urban landscape.
Santa Maria delle Vergini
Santa Maria delle Vergini is a monastery and convent that adds a quieter religious stop to a walk through Cosenza. It offers a glimpse into the city’s religious heritage and historic architecture.
Palazzo del Governo
In Piazza XV Marzo, the Palazzo del Governo is one of the important examples of nineteenth-century architecture in southern Italy. It stands in Cosenza’s historic centre and serves as the seat of the Province of Cosenza, making it part of both the city’s architectural and civic history.
The wider Calabria region is represented here by the Province of Cosenza, whose capital is the city itself. The province includes 150 municipalities, more than any other province in Calabria, and is the most populous province in the region.
Chiesa delle Cappuccinelle
Along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Chiesa delle Cappuccinelle—also called the Church of Santa Croce—stands at 317 metres above sea level. Built in 1581, it now houses the Guanellian order.
Its sixteenth-century monumental doorway was made by craftsmen from Rogliano in local tuff rock. Above it, a twisted-design rose window provides a distinctive detail. The adjacent quadrangular cloister probably dates from the seventeenth century. Inside are an Immaculate painting from 1558 by Pietro Negroni and an eighteenth-century wooden Ecce Homo bust.
Museum of Brettii and Enotri
The Museum of Brettii and Enotri, or Museo dei Brettii e degli Enotri, explores Cosenza’s history through its permanent archaeological exhibition. Since 2009, the museum has been housed in the fifteenth-century monumental complex of Sant’Agostino, so the building itself forms part of the experience.
Cathedral of Cosenza
At the heart of the historic centre, along Corso Telesio, stands the Cathedral of Cosenza, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta or the Duomo. The building was constructed around the second half of the eleventh century. After the earthquake of 1184, it became known for its Gothic lines and Florentine features.
The cathedral stands in Piazza Duomo at an elevation of 251 metres above sea level. Inside is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Pilerio, which gives the building particular religious importance within the city and the Archdiocese of Cosenza-Bisignano.
Nearby, the Museo diocesano adds another museum stop to the historic-centre route. The Galleria nazionale di Cosenza is housed in the ancient Palazzo Arnone and is another notable place to discover in this part of the city.
Santissimo Salvatore
The Church of Santissimo Salvatore, also known as the Greek Church, belongs to Cosenza’s Italo-Albanian community. Services are celebrated according to the Byzantine rite, making this an important place of worship and a reminder of the city’s cultural diversity.
San Domenico
In Piazza Tommaso Campanella, the Church of San Domenico marks a distinctive point where Cosenza’s older and newer areas meet. It is one of the historic religious buildings to include when exploring the city on foot.
San Francesco di Paola Bridge and the Busento
The San Francesco di Paola Bridge, also known as the Calatrava Bridge, creates a striking gateway to Cosenza’s historic centre from the Gergeri district. Designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava, its cable-stayed structure was inaugurated on January 26, 2018.
The bridge belongs to the city’s contemporary landscape, while the nearby Busento provides a different setting for discovering Cosenza. Together, they connect modern architecture, public spaces and the routes between the city’s neighbourhoods.
Museo all’aperto Bilotti
The Museo all’aperto Bilotti, or Bilotti Open-Air Museum, brings contemporary art into the streets of Cosenza. Its sculptures are displayed outdoors, allowing visitors to encounter modern art as part of a city walk rather than inside a traditional gallery.
The collection grew from artworks donated to the Municipality of Cosenza by Carlo Bilotti. It includes twenty sculptures by artists representing several currents of twentieth-century contemporary art. In 2019, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism declared the collection to be of historical and artistic interest.
Museo del Fumetto
The Museo del Fumetto offers another cultural stop in Cosenza. It complements the city’s archaeological, religious and contemporary-art museums with a collection devoted to comics.
Chiesa del Carmine and San Domenico
Chiesa del Carmine is another historic religious building to look for during a walk through Cosenza. Together with San Domenico and the Church of Santissimo Salvatore, it helps reveal the variety of churches distributed across the historic centre.
