The approach to Aragonese Castle

The Aragonese Castle rises from a fortified volcanic islet just off Ischia, connected to the island by a stone bridge. The setting combines dramatic rock, sea views and centuries of history, making it one of the essential things to see in Ischia.

The entrance tunnel is cut directly through the rock. Commissioned by Alfonso the Fifth of Aragon around the middle of the fifteenth century, it replaced an earlier approach from the sea, when access was possible only by a staircase on the northern side of the islet.

The tunnel extends for four hundred metres. Its high openings now bring light into the passage, but they once served a defensive purpose: defenders could drop boiling oil, stones and other materials onto attackers below. Beyond the tunnel, an uphill path leads outdoors, with smaller paths branching towards the castle’s buildings and gardens.

Since the 1970s, a lift carved into the rock has reached a height of sixty metres above sea level. At its upper levels, the fortified settlement was once large enough to shelter two thousand families.
