What to See in Kota Bharu

The city centre brings several of Kota Bharu’s most important historic buildings together. They can be explored as part of a compact route through Kelantan’s royal and cultural heritage.

Kelantan Islamic Museum

The Kelantan Islamic Museum, also known as Muzium Islam Kelantan, is dedicated to Islam and is located in Kota Bharu. It offers a direct introduction to the religious heritage that forms an important part of the city and the wider state of Kelantan.

Masjid Muhammadi

Masjid Muhammadi is one of Kelantan’s best-known landmarks and the state mosque of Kelantan. It is also called Masjid Jamek Muhammadi, while some people in Kelantan refer to it as Masjid Besar, meaning the Grand Mosque.

The mosque’s name honours Sultan Muhammad the Fourth, who made an important contribution to Kelantan. Its role as the state mosque reflects the importance of Islam to the state and its people.

Balai Besar Palace

Istana Balai Besar, or Balai Besar Palace, remains an important setting for the ceremonies and royal traditions of the Sultanate of Kelantan. Although it is no longer a royal residence, it continues to serve as the official palace for royal ceremonies and customs.

The palace’s history goes back to 1844, when Sultan Muhammad II moved Kelantan’s administrative centre from Kota Saba to the present Kota Bharu. He ordered a palace to be built as his residence, and Istana Balai Besar subsequently became home to several sultans, beginning with Sultan Muhammad II and continuing through Sultan Ahmad, Sultan Muhammad III, Sultan Mansur, and Sultan Muhammad IV.

The two-storey building was constructed by Kelantan craftsmen under the direction of Muhamad Salleh, a craftsman from Terengganu who lived in Kampung Kangkong in the Pasir Mas district. He was known for carpentry and carving. Later additions were made to the front section and audience hall during the reigns of Sultan Muhammad IV and Sultan Ismail, while the palace’s distinctive original design was preserved.

Istana Jahar

Near Balai Besar Palace stands Istana Jahar, also known as Jahar Palace. This historic royal building preserves the character of a Kelantanese Malay palace and offers another perspective on the state’s royal past.

Construction began during the reign of Sultan Muhammad II, who intended the palace for his grandson, Long Kundur Bendahara. It continued under Sultan Ahmad and was completed before Long Kundur became Sultan Muhammad III in 1889. He used Istana Jahar as one of his royal residences alongside Istana Balai Besar.

The palace is notable for its pentagonal porte-cochère, first-floor balcony, and decorative carvings. The balcony allowed members of the royal family to watch ceremonies held in front of the building. Its original design has been preserved even though the palace’s use later changed.

The name Istana Jahar was adopted in 1911, after Sultan Muhammad IV returned from a visit to Singapore and had the palace repaired. It refers to a jahar tree that grew in the palace grounds. The building was later given to his son, Tengku Ismail, who became Sultan…

Istana Batu Royal Museum

The Istana Batu Royal Museum, also known as Muzium Diraja, is another royal building in Kota Bharu. A visit here adds a museum experience to the palace district and helps complete the picture of Kelantan’s royal heritage.

Together with Istana Jahar and Istana Balai Besar, it forms part of a concentrated group of places connected with the state’s sultans and royal traditions.

Kelantan Museum

The Kelantan Museum, also called Muzium Kelantan or Muzium Negeri Kelantan, is located on Jalan Hospital in Kota Bharu. It provides another cultural stop within the city and extends the visit beyond the royal buildings and Islamic heritage sites.

For travellers deciding what to see in Kota Bharu, the museum is a useful part of a route focused on the history and identity of Kelantan.
