What to see in Vlieland

Stelling 12H

Hidden in the sea-facing dunes, Stelling 12H is a German bunker complex built during the Second World War as part of the Atlantic Wall. The site lies along the Kantonierspad path, around 450 metres west of the anchorage point.

For decades, drifting sand almost completely buried the bunkers. Excavation and restoration began in early 2017, and the complex has been open as a bunker museum since 2020. It offers a direct and atmospheric look at Vlieland’s wartime history.

Vuurduin lighthouse

Vuurduin stands on the Vuurboetsduin dune and is one of Vlieland’s most recognisable landmarks. Although the cast-iron tower is relatively small, its position on the dune places its light about 54 metres above sea level, allowing it to be seen far out at sea.

The current tower was designed by Quirinus Harder, who also designed the Low Lighthouse of IJmuiden. It replaced a round stone tower built in 1836 by Jan Valk, while an earlier beacon on wooden poles stood here before that. The oldest known reference to a beacon on Vlieland dates from 1462.

The lighthouse’s distinctive light flashes for two seconds and then remains dark for two seconds. Since 1990, Vuurduin has been open to visitors, with a lighthouse keeper present during opening hours.

De Noordwester

De Noordwester occupies a building dating from 1911. It originally served as an information centre about the Wadden Sea and later became a local attraction filled with exhibits about the island and its surrounding waters.

Its former displays included aquariums with local marine life, a tank where visitors could touch fish, and the skeleton of a sperm whale that had washed ashore on Vlieland. Other exhibits presented objects collected by beachcombers, artefacts recovered by divers from the North Sea seabed, and more than 100 types of sand from around the world.

Sint-Nicolaaskerk, also known as Het Armhuis

In the heart of Oost-Vlieland stands Sint-Nicolaaskerk, the island’s main church. The building is one of the defining landmarks of the village and is also known locally as Het Armhuis.

Its central position makes it a natural stop while walking through Oost-Vlieland, the island’s principal village and the setting for several of Vlieland’s most important historic buildings.

Museum Tromp’s Huys

Museum Tromp’s Huys is a maritime museum in Oost-Vlieland, housed since 1956 in the island’s oldest house. The building dates from 1575 and is a national monument. It was once the residence of several commissioners of the Admiralty; after 1896, it became the home of the Akersloot family, who gave the house its current name.

The museum’s collection brings Vlieland’s maritime past to life through sea charts and ship models. It also tells the story of the island itself, including vanished buildings and the village of West-Vlieland, which disappeared beneath the waves in 1736.

The exhibitions also cover the famous shipwreck La Lutine and notable islanders such as the explorer Willem de Vlamingh and Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, the poet, writer and ship’s doctor.

Geit

Geit means “goat” in Dutch and is the name of a small sculpture by artist Peter Petersen. The playful statue adds a lighter moment to a walk through Vlieland’s historic and natural surroundings.

Drenkelingenhuisje

In the southwest of the Vliehors nature reserve, the small white Drenkelingenhuisje recalls the dangers of the sea. Built in 1890, the cottage served as a shelter for shipwreck survivors. Blankets, basic food and water were kept inside, and a telephone connected the shelter with the post house more than eight kilometres away.

After storms had passed, survivors were collected by horse and cart. Today, the cottage houses a small beachcomber’s museum, displaying objects found along the shore. Its fence, made from driftwood and old buoys, adds to the building’s distinctive appearance. The fence is dismantled in autumn and rebuilt in spring, continuing a long-standing local tradition.
