What to see in Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is almost flat and measures about 1.8 kilometres from north to south and 3 kilometres from east to west. Its total area is around 2 square kilometres, so much of the island can be explored on foot in a little over an hour. That compact scale makes it easy to move between the beaches and the island’s more developed areas.

Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach is the more developed part of Koh Lipe. It is one of the island’s main areas for accommodation and visitor activity, reflecting the important role tourism plays in the local economy. The beach’s white sand and clear water make it a natural starting point for discovering the island.

Sunset Beach, or Hat Pramong

Sunset Beach is also known as Hat Pramong. Compared with Pattaya Beach, it is a more secluded part of the island and offers a quieter setting beside the Andaman Sea. Its name makes it a natural place to include when exploring Koh Lipe’s different coastal landscapes.

Sunrise Beach, or Hat Chao Ley

Sunrise Beach is also called Hat Chao Ley. Like Sunset Beach, it is more secluded than the developed area around Pattaya Beach. The beach is part of Koh Lipe’s connection with the local chao leh community, whose presence is part of the island’s identity.

The surrounding marine environment

Koh Lipe is closely linked to the sea around it. Visitors come especially for its beaches and scuba diving, while the clear turquoise water makes the surrounding marine environment one of the island’s defining features. The archipelago lies in Satun Province in southern Thailand, close to the Malaysian border, creating a tropical island setting in the Andaman Sea.

Koh Lipe belongs to the Ko Lipe archipelago, a group of islands in southern Thailand. Looking beyond the island itself gives a broader sense of the setting: this is not only a beach destination, but part of an island landscape stretching through the Andaman Sea.

Because the island is small and almost flat, walking is a practical way to experience Koh Lipe. Tourism is central to the island’s economy, and accommodation is available for visitors. At the same time, Koh Lipe retains a distinct local identity. The name has several English spellings, including Koh Lipe, Koh Lipeh, Ko Lipey and Ko Lipe. Its Thai name comes from the original Malay name Pulau Nipis, meaning “thin island”; in the language of the local chao leh community, Koh Lipe is also said to mean “paper island.”
