Things to Do in Pattaya: What to See in the Thai Coastal City

Looking for things to do in Pattaya? This coastal city combines a lively nightlife district with remarkable cultural sites, including a monumental wooden sanctuary and a serene Buddhist temple. Pattaya is also a useful base for exploring Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast, while nearby Thailand offers many more destinations to discover. What to See in Pattaya

Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is one of Pattaya’s most distinctive landmarks: a vast wooden monument rising beside the shoreline. It is an unfinished museum that combines the appearance of a temple and a castle, drawing on the Ayutthaya Kingdom and Hindu and Buddhist spirituality.

Every part of the structure is made from wood, including teak and several varieties known in Thailand as Mai Deang, Mai Takien and Mai Panchaat. Intricate carved idols and sculptures cover the monument, giving the building an exceptional level of detail.

Construction began in 1981 under the vision of Thai businessman Lek Viriyaphan, who also created the Erawan Elephant Museum and the Ancient City. Work continues today, so visitors explore the interior wearing hard hats for safety. The site occupies 13 hectares of parkland overlooking the Siam Gulf.

Locals also call the monument Wang Boran or Prastar Mai, names that mean “ancient palace” or “wooden castle”.

Wat Phothi Samphan

Wat Phothi Samphan is a peaceful Buddhist temple in Chonburi province. Its name refers to a sea bodhi tree that once grew on the site and to the surname of the family that donated the land.

The temple was founded on 21 December 2498 BE, when Mr. Prong and Mrs. Yin Phansamniang donated five rai of land. Phra Kru Phothisarnprasat then began construction. Two years later, in 2500 BE, the foundation stone of the ordination hall was laid and the principal Buddha image was installed inside. The temple received its royal visungkamasima on 5 February of that year.

The principal Buddha image remains one of the key features to see inside the ordination hall.

Walking Street

Walking Street is Pattaya’s best-known nightlife district and becomes most active after dark. It is an entertainment and red-light district visited by both international travellers and Thais, with seafood restaurants, live music venues, go-go bars, nightclubs and hotels.

During the day, the road functions as a regular thoroughfare. At night, it turns into a busy promenade lined with beer bars, discothèques, sports bars and venues presenting live music, cabaret and other shows. Souvenir stalls add to the crowded atmosphere.

Walking Street is known for its late-night energy. Bars and clubs are officially required to close at 4 a.m., although some establishments stay open later illegally.

More Things to Do in Pattaya

Pattaya’s character changes significantly between its cultural landmarks and its nightlife centre. The Sanctuary of Truth offers a large-scale encounter with Thai craftsmanship and religious symbolism, while Wat Phothi Samphan provides a quieter setting focused on Buddhist tradition. Walking Street, by contrast, represents the city’s most energetic side after sunset.

Together, these three places show why the answer to “what to see in Pattaya” extends beyond the city’s nightlife reputation. They also make Pattaya an interesting stop for travellers exploring Phuket, Krabi or other destinations in Thailand.
