Things to Do in Port Sunlight: A Guide to the Model Village
Port Sunlight is a historic model village on the Wirral, created around the soap works of Lever Brothers. Its carefully planned streets, Arts and Crafts architecture, museums and galleries make it a rewarding place to explore, especially for anyone interested in industrial history, design and community life. Neywo has a free audio guide for Port Sunlight with 117 narrated places.
What to See in Port Sunlight
Port Sunlight Museum
The Port Sunlight Museum explains how William Lever created the village for the workers of his soap factory in the late nineteenth century. Its displays explore the development of Lever Brothers, the design of the housing and public buildings, and everyday life in the community.
The museum also puts Port Sunlight’s social vision into context. Lever aimed to create more than practical workers’ housing, bringing together fresh air, open space, education and culture in a carefully planned setting.
Port Sunlight and its architecture
The village itself is one of the main attractions. Its streets feature varied façades, architectural details and landscaped surroundings rather than monotonous rows of industrial housing. The design reflects the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, while the broad avenues and gardens create a unified but visually varied setting.
Walking through Port Sunlight reveals how architecture and social planning were intended to work together. The village remains a living example of an industrial community shaped around design, wellbeing and shared spaces.
Lady Lever Art Gallery
The Lady Lever Art Gallery is one of the most important places to visit in Port Sunlight. Its collection reflects the taste of William Hesketh Lever, with British painting and sculpture from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth century.
The gallery is also known for its decorative arts. English furniture, Wedgwood jasperware and Chinese ceramics appear alongside smaller collections of Ancient Greek vases and Roman sculpture. Five period rooms recreate interiors from grand historic houses, bringing paintings, furniture and sculpture together as they might have been displayed in a private home.
Unilever
Port Sunlight is closely connected with the origins of Unilever. The company was formed in 1929 when the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie merged with Lever Brothers, the British soap maker whose business had created the village.
This connection gives Port Sunlight an international dimension. The soap-making enterprise that began here became the foundation of a global consumer-goods company.
Places to Visit Around Port Sunlight and the Wirral
Port Sunlight is also a useful base for discovering the wider Wirral. Several nearby museums, historic buildings and waterfront sites help tell the story of the peninsula.
Thornton Manor and All Saints Church, Thornton Hough
Thornton Manor is a grand country house in the village of Thornton Hough. Built in the middle of the nineteenth century, it was altered and extended in several phases and is recognized as a Grade II* listed building.
All Saints Church on Raby Road is an active Anglican parish church and a Grade II listed building. Together with Thornton Manor, it forms part of the historic character of Thornton Hough.
Brimstage Hall and Tower
Brimstage Hall and Tower preserves a history stretching across several centuries. The tower dates from 1398, while the hall was rebuilt in the sixteenth century on the site of an earlier twelfth-century hall.
Today, the old courtyard has a lively atmosphere, with restaurants and gift shops gathered around the historic structure. The building is Grade I listed, reflecting its architectural and historic importance.
U-534
At Woodside, U-534 is a German Type IXC/40 submarine built in 1942 at the Deutsche Werft shipyard in Hamburg. It is one of only four German Second World War submarines preserved anywhere in the world, and the only one visitors can walk through with its interior exposed in sections.
U-534 spent its wartime career on training duties in the Baltic and never sank a ship. It was abandoned in the Kattegat in May 1945, remained on the seabed for nearly fifty years and was raised in a salvage operation in August 1993.
Williamson Art Gallery and Museum
The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum houses Wirral’s art collection. Paintings, sculpture and decorative arts reflect the cultural life of the peninsula and provide another perspective on the region’s artistic heritage.
Eureka! Science + Discovery
Eureka! Science + Discovery is a hands-on science centre designed for young children through to early teenagers. Its activities are based around STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths—with an emphasis on touching, experimenting, building and playful learning.
The centre opened in November 2022 in the former Spaceport attraction, following a fourteen-million-pound transformation.
Fort Perch Rock
Fort Perch Rock stands at New Brighton, guarding the mouth of Liverpool Bay. Built in the 1820s to defend the Port of Liverpool, it is a Grade II* listed coastal fortress with thick walls and strategic gun emplacements.
Today, the fort operates as a museum and tourist attraction. Visitors can explore its ramparts and learn about its military history inside the historic walls.
Leasowe Castle and Liscard Hall
Leasowe Castle is a historic landmark on the Wirral peninsula and a Grade II listed structure.
Liscard Hall no longer stands, but its history survives in Central Park. The mansion was built in 1832 for Sir John Tobin and later became the Wallasey School of Art. After years of neglect, it was destroyed by fire in 2008 and demolished soon afterwards.
The River Dee
The River Dee links landscapes and communities between Wales and England before reaching its broad estuary and flowing into Liverpool Bay. It passes through Chester and forms part of the wider geographical setting around the Wirral peninsula.
