What to see in Swanage

Durlston Country Park

Just outside Swanage, Durlston Country Park covers 320 acres of coastline on the Isle of Purbeck. It is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and forms part of the 630-mile South West Coast Path.

The park brings together cliffs, wildlife and reminders of local industry. Durlston Castle was built in 1887 by George Burt as a visitor attraction for his estate. Nearby, the Great Globe is a 40-tonne stone sphere, three metres in diameter, with a map of the world as it was known in 1880 carved into its surface.

The park also contains the Tilly Whim Caves, opened by George Burt in 1887 as a tourist attraction. They were formerly working quarries, and old quarry faces and loading points can still be seen. Further along the coast, Swanage Lighthouse stands on Anvil Point. Built in 1880, it guided ships through these waters.

Swanage Railway

Swanage Railway is a heritage line running through the Dorset countryside from Wareham to Swanage. The branch line opened in 1885, was absorbed into the London and South Western Railway a year later, and lost its regular passenger service in 1972.

Railway enthusiasts later rebuilt the route from Swanage, restoring the line as a heritage railway. The revived railway runs for about nine and a half miles, with stops at Norden, Corfe Castle, Harman’s Cross and Herston Halt.

A regular park-and-ride service normally uses steam locomotives to travel from Norden through Corfe Castle village and past the ruins of Corfe Castle before reaching the coast. It offers both a heritage experience and a scenic way to travel towards Swanage.

Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre

Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre explores local history and also serves as a family history centre. The museum was established in 1976 and has been located together with the heritage centre since 2005.
