What to See in Rockport
Fulton Mansion State Historic Site
The Fulton Mansion State Historic Site overlooks Aransas Bay and offers a glimpse into an exceptionally modern late-nineteenth-century home. George Ware Fulton and Harriet Gillette Smith began building the four-story residence in 1874 and completed it in 1877, naming it Oakhurst.
The mansion is one of the earliest Second Empire-style buildings constructed in Texas and one of the most important surviving examples of the style in the southwestern United States. Its interior reflects the comfort and technology available to the family: indoor plumbing with sinks in every bedroom, gas lighting, central heating, three bathrooms and two built-in copper tubs.
George W. Fulton Mansion
The George W. Fulton Mansion is the historic building associated with Oakhurst, the former home of George Ware Fulton and Harriet Gillette Smith. Its position overlooking Aransas Bay gives the four-story residence a strong presence on the coast.
Beyond its architectural importance, the house is notable for its advanced features. Indoor plumbing, bedroom sinks, gas lighting and central heating made it remarkably up to date when it was completed in 1877.
Mathis House
At 612 Church Street, the Mathis House is a Greek Revival cottage built in 1867. The historic residence was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey.
Its proportions and entrance make it especially distinctive. The one-story, five-bay framed cottage stands above a basement, with the main floor reached by a gently flared staircase. A portico supported by two pairs of square, fluted wooden columns frames the entrance, while sidelights and a transom surround the doorway. The same family owned the residence for many years, adding continuity to its architectural history.
T. H. Mathis House
The T. H. Mathis House, also at 612 Church Street, is another name used for the historic Mathis residence. Built in 1867, it is an important surviving example of Greek Revival architecture in Rockport.
Look for the raised basement, the piano nobile reached by a flared staircase and the entrance portico with its paired wooden columns. The columns’ molded capitals are echoed by pilasters on the portico and at the corners of the main façade. The house’s inclusion in the Historic American Buildings Survey preserves a detailed record of its design.
