St. Canute’s Cathedral
This Gothic brick church, also known as Sankt Knuds Kirke, dominates the skyline with a 63‑metre tower. Its crypt contains the remains of King Canute the Saint and his brother Benedict, and the altarpiece by Claus Berg dates from around 1520.
Lindved
Just beyond the city outskirts, Lindved is an old manor whose main building was erected in 1620 and later extended between 1798 and 1842. Across the Lindved millpond stands a protected watermill from 1847, together illustrating a historic rural estate.
Lumby Mølle
A traditional windmill built in 1820, Lumby Mølle ground grain until 1965. Its lower brick and granite floors support a wooden upper section with a boat‑shaped cap that turns via a wind rose; the mill appeared on a three‑kroner stamp in 1988.
Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home
Located on Munke Møllestræde, this small house sheltered the Andersen family from 1807 to 1819. The 42‑square‑metre dwelling held three apartments, and the museum now reconstructs the Andersen and Köcker living spaces while displaying the author’s own childhood recollections.
Thriges Kraftcentral
Built in 1916 as the power station for Thriges’ factory, this industrial site retains an almost intact early‑20th‑century interior. The original B&W diesel generator from 1923 is started on the first Sunday of most months, letting visitors hear and see the machine in action.
Flakhaven
Flakhaven is the central square of Odense, home to the town hall since 1480 and a market place since the 13th century. It has hosted events ranging from Andersen’s honorary citizenship in 1867 to the liberation celebrations of 1945, and was reshaped in 1987 into a gently sunken shell inspired by Siena’s piazza.
Hans Christian Andersen Museum
The main museum dedicated to the fairy‑tale writer combines his possible birthplace, newer exhibition spaces and a garden inspired by his stories. A striking underground extension opened in 2021, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, and the site covers 5,600 square metres.
Nonnebakken
This grassy hill hides the remains of a Viking ring fortress (Trelleborg type) built between 980 and 1000 under Sweyn Forkbeard. Excavations show an inner diameter of about 120 metres, with the earthwork rampart and palisade still traceable beneath later constructions.
Jernbanegade 13 (Brandts 13)
The building’s classical façade features a temple pediment and a picture frieze depicting Danish history and Norse mythology. Originally housing Funen’s Art Museum from 1885, it now accommodates the Funen Art Academy.
Danish Railway Museum
Situated beside Odense railway station, this national museum occupies a former engine shed and workshop. Highlights include the E 994 express steam locomotive, Denmark’s first S‑train from 1934, the 1935 “lightning train” and several royal saloon carriages, all displayed in a 10,000‑square‑metre hall.
The Funen Village
Den Fynske Landsby is an open‑air museum that recreates rural Funen life around 1800. Twenty‑five buildings—including farms, a vicarage, a watermill, a school, an inn and a windmill—are arranged as a compact village, with live interpretation in summer showing period crafts and cooking.
Europæisk Automobilmuseum
Formerly located on the city’s outskirts, this museum gathered over one hundred vehicles with a focus on the 1950s and 1960s. The collection also featured early motorised bicycles, motorcycles and mopeds, offering a snapshot of mid‑20th‑century motoring.
Kunstbygningen Filosoffen
Positioned beside Munke Mose and the Odense River, this art and cultural venue was transferred to Odense Municipality in 1982. After renovations in 2014 it gained an open forecourt and outdoor dining area, providing a pleasant spot for exhibitions and refreshments.
Odense Bunkermuseum
Hidden beneath the old Kragsbjerggård farm, this Cold‑War bunker was completed in 1954 and remained operational until 2007. Opened as a museum in 2012, it preserves command rooms, communications centres, a kitchen for thirty people and an emergency generator, with a thirty‑metre tunnel leading to a 1990 extension.
Odins Odense
Located near the suburb of Næsby, this open‑air museum presents Iron Age houses from the Pre‑Roman Iron Age (around 500 BC) through to the Viking Age (793‑1050 AD). Inside the reconstructions, brief explanations describe daily life and living conditions of the inhabitants across these centuries.
