The Holy Mountain of Orta, known in Italian as the Sacro Monte di Orta, is a devotional complex on San Nicolao hill. It overlooks Orta San Giulio and Lake Orta and is one of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The sacred route follows a rising spiral through twenty chapels. Together, they recount the life of Saint Francis, from his birth to his canonization. Frescoes and terracotta sculptures present the episodes, while the surrounding vegetation and the route through the hill were designed to guide visitors from one chapel to the next.

The complex began taking shape at the end of the sixteenth century, soon after the nearby Holy Mountain of Varallo. The project was promoted by the community of Orta and Amico Canobio, an abbot from Novara. It was built near the existing Church of Saint Nicholas, where a fifteenth-century statue of the Madonna of Pietà was venerated.

The chapels are covered with slabs of micaceous gneiss, and many of their paintings and sculptures were created by highly regarded artists of the period. The combination of art, devotion and wooded surroundings makes the Sacro Monte one of the most distinctive things to see in Orta San Giulio.

Buccione Castle

Further along, high above the southeastern end of Lake Orta, Buccione Castle—also known as the Tower of Buccione—stands on a hill between the territories of Orta San Giulio and Gozzano. Both the fortress and the hill take their name from Buccione, a nearby hamlet of Gozzano at the southern end of the lake.

The position is central to the experience of visiting the castle. From the hill, the fortress commands views across the lake and over the Novara plain. On a clear day, the Church of San Gaudenzio in Novara is visible.
