Buarcos preserves several reminders of the settlement’s past. The Castle of Redondos, also known as the Tower of Redondos, survives only as the corner of an ancient square tower. Excavations in 1992 and 1993 uncovered part of a substantial settlement, including an industrial area, a defensive wall and a gateway about 1.8 metres wide.

The site also reveals evidence of metalworking. Archaeologists found hearths, furnaces, slag and pieces of lead. Finds from the ninth century BC have been interpreted as evidence of Phoenician presence, while pottery from the seventh and sixth centuries BC is particularly common. The hill’s position offers views across the Mondego’s rice-growing landscape.

Visit the Núcleo Museológico do Sal

At Armazéns de Lavos, the Núcleo Museológico do Sal introduces the traditions of salt production in a working salt-marsh landscape. The museum is set within the Corredor da Cobra saltworks, part of the protected municipal area known as Salina do Corredor da Cobra.

The visitor centre occupies a renovated old salt warehouse and contains a permanent exhibition and a small museum shop. Outside, educational trails and regional and local walking routes lead through the open-air museum. The site is a branch of the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha and belongs to the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Discover the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça

In Paião, within the municipality of Figueira da Foz, the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça is one of the area’s historic landmarks. Its history reaches back to the twelfth century. The monastery was founded around 1162 by Dom Afonso Henriques and is thought to have belonged to the Benedictine order at the beginning.

The ruins also remain connected with a local tradition: every year on 15 August, a three-day festival takes place between the chapel of Seiça and the monastery ruins. Market stalls bring food, textiles, handicrafts, fruit and vegetables, and agricultural equipment to the setting.

High on the Serra das Alhadas, the Dólmen das Carniçosas forms part of the Monumentos da Serra da Brenha. This prehistoric funerary monument consists of an entrance court, a passageway and a polygonal chamber built from large stone slabs.

The passage is about 4.5 metres long, with two parallel rows of slabs set roughly 1.75 metres apart. The chamber measures about three metres across. The dolmen stands on a mound known as a mamoa, which is itself part of the funerary monument. Protected as a National Monument since 1910, it offers a direct connection with the area’s prehistoric past.
