Igreja do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos

The Igreja do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, also known as the Matosinhos Parish Church or Igreja do Salvador, is one of the city’s important religious landmarks. Construction began in the sixteenth century, and the building was altered several times afterwards. Its design has a Renaissance character, while later work changed the main chapel and other parts of the church.

The church, including its contents, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982. Its importance is also connected with the pilgrimage and celebrations associated with it.

Padrão do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos

The Padrão do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos is a commemorative monument in the parish of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira. It is also known as the Zimbório do Senhor do Padrão, Padrão do Senhor da Areia and Nosso Senhor do Padrão.

Classified as a National Monument since 1971, it reflects the religious and maritime traditions that have shaped the identity of Matosinhos.

Fort of Leça da Palmeira

The Fort of Leça da Palmeira, also called the Castle of Matosinhos or the Fort of Our Lady of the Snows, stands as a reminder of the area’s coastal defences. Built between 1652 and 1720, it replaced an earlier fortification and formed part of the defensive system at the mouth of the Douro River.

Its position in Leça da Palmeira connects the city’s military history with its long-standing relationship with the sea.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova

Among the most distinctive things to see in Matosinhos is the Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, or Boa Nova Tea House. The building stands directly among the rocks beside the sea, just two metres from the water, with the coastline forming its backdrop.

Designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, it was constructed between 1958 and 1963 and is considered one of his earliest works. The setting makes it a particularly striking meeting point between architecture and the Atlantic landscape.

Casa-Museu da Quinta de Santiago

In Leça da Palmeira, the Casa-Museu da Quinta de Santiago is also known as Museu Santiago or Museu da Quinta de Santiago. The museum is located in Matosinhos and adds a cultural stop to an itinerary through the city’s coastal and historic areas.

Mosteiro de Leça do Balio

The Mosteiro de Leça do Balio combines religious architecture with the defensive features of a fortress. The complex includes the Church of Santa Maria and is an unusual example of fortified religious architecture near the mouth of the River Leça.

The church seen today dates from the second half of the fourteenth century, with 1371 given as its construction date. The work was undertaken on the initiative of Brother Estêvão Vasques Pimentel. Its architecture shows a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

The site has a much older religious history. Around the year 900, a convent dedicated to the Saviour stood here, although the date of its destruction is unknown. It may have disappeared during Almanzor’s invasion at the beginning of the eleventh century.

Casa da Cerveja

Casa da Cerveja is an immersive visitor experience inside the Super Bock Group production centre in Leça do Balio. It follows the brewing process from the ingredients and production of the wort through fermentation and filling, while also presenting the history of the Super Bock brand.

One of its most recognisable spaces is the Sala de Cobre, or Copper Room, the production centre’s first brewing room. Its copper-coloured boilers remain in place. The exhibition also features walls made from recycled glass panels created by melting 96,800 Super Bock bottles.

The visit ends with a tasting of two styles from the Seleção 1927 special beer range, paired with small delicacies.

Roman tanks at Angeiras Beach

The rocky shoreline of Angeiras Beach contains a group of tanks carved directly into the rock. Dating from the third or fourth century, during the Roman occupation, they are classified as a national monument.

The tanks are relatively small and shallow and were probably used to make brine rather than garum. Today, they are buried in the beach sand, offering a modest but unusual trace of Roman activity in Matosinhos.

The Cruzeiro de Leça do Balio is a cultural heritage monument in Matosinhos. It is also recorded under the designation Cruzeiro de Leça do Bailio and can be included with the monastery and other landmarks in the Leça do Balio area.

Ponte do Carro and Ponte de Guifões are both cultural heritage monuments in Matosinhos. They provide additional historic points of interest away from the best-known coastal sights and form part of the local character of the surrounding area.
