What to See in Ponte de Lima

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Guia

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Guia was built between the late 16th and early 17th century, replacing an earlier hermitage dedicated to São Vicente Mártir. Its single nave, chancel, sacristy and bell tower form a longitudinal plan, while the exterior features a three-arched galilee and a niche with an image of Nossa Senhora da Guia.

Inside, gilded woodwork and patterned 17th-century polychrome tiles create a richly decorated interior. The church also contains two altars, pulpits and a choir loft. The painted, coffered vault and gilded altarpiece in the chancel are particularly notable. The church was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1978.

Museu dos Terceiros

The Museu dos Terceiros brings together two historic churches and their adjoining buildings: the Church of Santo António dos Frades Capuchos and the Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis. The complex also includes the cloister and the remaining wing of a Capuchin convent that was demolished between the 18th and 19th centuries.

The museum opened on 30 April 1977 and preserves sacred art from Ponte de Lima. Its combination of churches, convent buildings and cloister offers a close look at the religious and artistic traditions of the region. The ensemble has been recognized as a Property of Public Interest since 1974.

Teatro Diogo Bernardes

Built in 1893 in the Italian style and inaugurated in 1896, the Teatro Diogo Bernardes has been part of Ponte de Lima’s cultural life for more than a century. After a complete remodeling in 1999, the theatre continued to host a varied program, including theatre, revue shows and light music.

The venue has welcomed Portuguese performers such as Raul Solnado, Nicolau Breyner, Vitorino and Manuel Freire. It seats 310 spectators.

Capela da Senhora da Penha de França

The Capela da Senhora da Penha de França was built in 1613 by João Lourenço, a tradesman who paid for it himself. Its purpose was closely connected to the Torre da Cadeia, the old prison tower opposite: the chapel enabled prisoners to attend religious services.

João Lourenço also established a Sunday mass and entrusted the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima with maintaining this commitment. The chapel’s main altarpiece dates from the mid-18th century, later than the building itself.

Torres de São Paulo e da Cadeia

The Towers of São Paulo and the Cadeia, together with the short section of wall between them, are among the last visible remains of Ponte de Lima’s medieval defenses. The town was an important settlement and served as the capital of the Alto Minho region until the 15th century.

Only a small part of the original fortifications survives, making these towers a particularly useful reminder of the town’s fortified past.

Igreja da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima

The Igreja da Misericórdia forms part of the larger architectural ensemble of the church and hospital of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima. Its cultural importance has been officially recognized since 1946, when the ensemble was classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Igreja Matriz de Ponte de Lima

Also known as the Church of Our Lady of Angels, the Igreja Matriz de Ponte de Lima is the town’s main parish church. It stands in the parish of Arca e Ponte de Lima, in Portugal’s Viana do Castelo district, and is one of the central religious landmarks to include in a walk through the historic center.

Paços do Marquês

The Paços do Marquês is one of Ponte de Lima’s principal historic buildings. It is also known as the Paço do Alcaide, the Paço dos Viscondes de Vila Nova de Cerveira and the Palácio dos Marqueses de Ponte de Lima.

Located in the historic heart of the town, the building reflects Ponte de Lima’s connection with noble and civic history.

Capela das Pereiras

The Capela das Pereiras, officially known as the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia das Pereiras, replaced an earlier hermitage on the same site. The original temple was built in the 16th century, and the chapel was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755.

A major transformation followed in 1818, when a rectangular apse and sacristy were added to the original single-nave layout. The current façade dates from that renovation and has a neoclassical frontispiece reached by a small staircase. The chapel has been a Municipal Heritage Site since 1982.

Casa de Nossa Senhora da Aurora

Casa de Nossa Senhora da Aurora, also called Casa dos Condes de Aurora, is a historic residence named after the Counts of Aurora, who owned it. Its cultural importance has been officially recognized since 26 September 1977, when it was classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Ponte de Ponte de Lima

The Ponte de Ponte de Lima, commonly called the Ponte Velha or Old Bridge, is the town’s defining landmark. It crosses the Lima River in the parish of Arca e Ponte de Lima and has been recognized as a National Monument since 1910.

The bridge is an essential stop on any visit to Ponte de Lima. It connects the town’s historic identity with the river that gives the town its name and provides one of its most memorable views.

More Historic Places to Visit

The Pelourinho de Ponte de Lima is a small stone monument in the historic center and a recognized cultural heritage site. It offers a quiet glimpse into the town’s long civic history.

Casa das Pereiras includes the historic house, its garden and the surrounding grounds, known locally as the logradouro. Together, they form a cultural heritage property that reflects traditional life in the area.

Outside the central streets, Casa dos da Garrida is an 18th-century manor house in São João da Ribeira, within the parish of Arca e Ponte de Lima. It is also known as Casa da Garrida, Casa Garrida or Casa de São José, and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 26 February 1982.

Ponte de Lima is one of the destinations worth including when exploring Portugal, while Viana do Castelo provides another nearby northern Portuguese city to discover.
