Largo da Praça do Peixe and the Fish Market

Largo da Praça do Peixe is the historic Fish Square in the heart of Aveiro’s old town. For generations, fish and salt arrived here through the Canal dos Botirões, with boats tying up beside the square for the daily trade.

A stone fountain from 1876 stands at its centre. Behind it is the Fish Market, originally opened in 1910 as the Mercado José Estevão. Fishmongers still occupy the ground floor, while the upper level contains a restaurant.

Aveiro City Museum and Art Nouveau

The Church of São João Evangelista, also known as the Carmelite Church, stands in Praça Marquês de Pombal. This 18th-century church has been a National Monument since 1910.

Mosteiro de Jesus and the Aveiro Museum

The former Convent of Jesus is now home to the Museum of Aveiro. Founded in 1461 for the female Dominican Order, the convent became particularly associated with Princess Joana of Portugal, daughter of King Afonso V.

In 1472, Joana entered the convent instead of pursuing a royal marriage. She lived there in prayer until her death in 1490. The people of Aveiro soon began to venerate her, and she was beatified in 1693. Today, she is the city’s patron saint, celebrated on May 12.

The building changed considerably through renovations in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The religious community remained until 1874, when the last nuns left. In 1911, the former convent became the Museum of Aveiro. It had already been classified as a National Monument in 1910.

Cathedral of Aveiro

The Cathedral of Aveiro is the seat of the Diocese of Aveiro. It is also known as the Church of Saint Dominic, or Igreja de São Domingos, reflecting its origins as a Dominican convent founded in 1423.

The present building is an example of Portuguese Baroque architecture, with a façade characterized by movement and light. The cathedral has been classified as a National Monument of Portugal since March 1996.

Igreja do Convento do Carmo

The Igreja do Convento do Carmo, usually called the Igreja do Carmo, is a classified cultural heritage monument in Aveiro. It is one of the historic religious buildings included in the city’s network of churches and convents.

Pelourinho de Esgueira

Outside the central group of sights, the Pelourinho de Esgueira marks the former civic centre of Esgueira. The stone pillory stands beside the former Paços do Concelho, or old town hall, where municipal authority was once exercised.

It has been protected as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, recognizing its connection with local autonomy and justice.

Aveiro Municipal Stadium – Mário Duarte

The Estádio Municipal de Aveiro – Mário Duarte is a modern stadium just outside the city centre and the home ground of SC Beira-Mar. Designed by the Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira, it was built for UEFA Euro 2004 and opened on November 15, 2003, with a friendly between Portugal and Greece.
