What to See in Wilmington, North Carolina

The city’s historic district brings several important sites within an easy walking route. These are some of the most notable places to include in a visit.

Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary

The Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary is one of Wilmington’s most remarkable buildings. Designed by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino and completed in 1911, it is an example of Spanish Baroque architecture.

Its construction is especially unusual: the church was built without wooden beams, steel supports, or nails. Instead, interlocking brick tiles form self-supporting vaults and a dome. The building first served as a pro-cathedral for the Catholic jurisdiction in North Carolina, before becoming a diocesan shrine in 2005 and a minor basilica in 2013.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church was the first Presbyterian congregation established in Wilmington. Its place in the city’s religious history makes it a significant stop while walking through the historic district.

Burgwin-Wright House

Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House is the only colonial-era structure in Wilmington that is open to the public today. It was built for John Burgwin, a merchant, planter, and government official.

The house contains rooms furnished with antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as hundreds of objects connected with the past. Its site also preserves parts of an earlier city jail, dating from around 1744, including outdoor and sub-basement jail cells.

The surrounding two acres contain seven colonial-style garden areas. An orchard with pomegranate and fig trees, a kitchen garden, and a rose garden offer different perspectives on colonial life. A separate kitchen house, with its massive hearth, reveals the scale of cooking and domestic work in the 18th century.

St. James Episcopal Church

St. James Episcopal Church is the oldest church in Wilmington. Its congregation was originally chartered as part of the Church of England on November 27, 1729, making it one of North Carolina’s oldest continually active congregations.

The church remains an active place of worship in the heart of Wilmington’s historic district.

Thalian Hall

Thalian Hall has been a central part of Wilmington’s cultural life for well over a century. Built in 1858, the building originally served as both city hall and a theater.

Its two-story stuccoed brick exterior combines Classical Revival elements with Late Victorian details. The front portico, supported by four tall Corinthian columns, gives the building an especially grand appearance. Today, the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts hosts professional, regional, and local shows. The organization has managed the hall since 1963.

Temple of Israel

At the corner of Fourth and Market Streets, Temple of Israel represents an important part of Wilmington’s Jewish and Southern history. Built in 1876, it is the oldest synagogue in North Carolina and one of the earliest Reform synagogues in the American South.

The building has been a Wilmington landmark for well over a century.

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church is another historic landmark in Wilmington’s historic district. Its importance to the city’s heritage is recognized by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in New Hanover County.

Cape Fear Museum

The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is located in downtown Wilmington and is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. Founded in 1898, it explores both the history of the Cape Fear region and the world of science through its exhibits.

It is a useful stop for understanding the area’s past while adding a scientific perspective to a visit.

Cameron Art Museum

The Cameron Art Museum is a center for visual arts and community creativity. It began in 1962 as St. John’s Museum of Art, originally housed in the historic 1804 Masonic Lodge building downtown. After four decades, the museum moved to its current location at the intersection of Independence and 17th Streets in 2001 and adopted its present name.

Its facilities include three exhibition areas, a lecture and reception hall, outdoor exhibition space, a clay studio, and an arts education center.

Wilmington and New Hanover County

Wilmington is the county seat and largest community of New Hanover County, a coastal region in southeastern North Carolina. The county was created as New Hanover Precinct in 1729 and became a county in 1739.

Water covers a significant part of the county, with sounds, inlets, creeks, and rivers shaping the landscape. The coastal area also includes the beach communities of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach, each with its own seaside character.
