Prora

Prora is an enormous building complex stretching along the Baltic coast. Nazi Germany built it between 1936 and 1939 as part of the Strength Through Joy programme, with the intention of creating a gigantic holiday resort for German workers.

The plan consisted of eight identical blocks running 4.5 kilometres parallel to the shore. The resort was never completed, and no holidaymakers stayed there as originally intended. Its immense scale was instead used as a propaganda symbol, presenting the power of the regime through architecture and construction.

Prora is also one of the few surviving examples of rationalist architecture from the Third Reich era. After the Second World War, the complex was used first by the Soviet Army, then by the East German Volksarmee, and later by the German Bundeswehr. It remained a military zone and was closed to the public for decades.

Parts of Prora now have new uses, including a large youth hostel, a hotel, and holiday apartments. The site therefore combines a difficult history with the story of a building complex that has been transformed for civilian life.

Granitz Hunting Lodge

The Granitz Hunting Lodge, or Jagdschloss Granitz, stands at the edge of the Granitz forest. Built between 1837 and 1846, it served as a summer residence for Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus, the ruling prince of this part of Rügen.

The Gothic-style palace was designed by Johann Gottfried Steynmaier and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Its soaring central tower, crenellated walls, and setting among beech trees give it a fairy-tale appearance, although its original purpose was practical: it was a hunting retreat for the Putbus nobility.

Today, the lodge is one of the most visited castles in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Its architecture makes it a particularly striking destination for anyone interested in the island’s aristocratic past.

Oldtimer Museum Rügen

The Oldtimer Museum Rügen brings together railway heritage and classic automobiles in a large hall at Prora. The museum occupies part of the former Nazi-era Kraft durch Freude complex, a protected monument, and covers 10,000 square metres.

It opened in 1994 as the Rügen Railway and Technology Museum before expanding into a broader collection of historic vehicles. Its railway exhibits include locomotives from the former Deutsche Reichsbahn, including a streamlined Class 03, a Class 44 freight locomotive, a rebuilt Class 50.35, and a Class 52.80.

The museum also has open-air grounds for larger exhibits. Prora station, on the Lietzow-to-Binz line, is located directly outside, making the museum an especially notable stop for visitors interested in trains, transport, and industrial history.

Sportler

Sportler, meaning “The Athletes”, is a striking sculpture included among the guide’s points of interest. Its simple title and visual presence make it a short but distinctive stop while exploring the area.

Granitzer Ort

Granitzer Ort is a quiet headland on the northeastern coast of Rügen. The land is low and flat, with views extending over the Baltic Sea towards the northeast.

The surrounding terrain changes inland. Around one kilometre to the south, the ground rises gently to about 87 metres, creating a contrast between the open headland and the higher landscape behind it. Granitzer Ort offers a chance to experience a calmer, less built-up side of the coast.

Dorfkirche Binz

The Dorfkirche Binz is the village church that has long served as the spiritual centre of the local community. It remains the seat of the Protestant parish of Binz, which belongs to the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany.

Since 2012, the parish has been part of the Propstei Stralsund. Before that, it belonged to the Stralsund church district of the former Pomeranian Evangelical Church. The church adds a local religious and community dimension to an area more widely associated with the Baltic coast and seaside tourism.
