Reichenstein Monastery

Reichenstein Monastery stands on a hill deep in the Rur valley, in Monschau’s Kalterherberg district close to the Belgian border. The site is closely connected with the Upper Rur Valley nature reserve.

Its history reaches back to the eleventh century, when a hilltop castle stood here. In the twelfth century, the site became a Premonstratensian monastery. After its dissolution during French secularization, the estate passed into private hands. The buildings were acquired in 2008 by the French Abbey of Notre-Dame de Bellaigue, associated with the Society of Saint Pius X, with the aim of establishing a Benedictine monastery. Reichenstein has been a Benedictine monastery since 2017.

Dorfmuseum – Uraalt Scholl

In Konzen, the Pankratius Chapel stands in the middle of the cemetery, immediately beside the parish church of St. Peter. The chapel is also known as St. Pankratius.

The church is named after Lambert of Liège, described as the first local bishop. It also has the unexpected nickname Kaffeedom, or “coffee cathedral”, a reference to the former smuggling of coffee across the nearby German-Belgian border.

St. Mariä Geburt

St. Mariä Geburt is a protected Baroque church whose history reaches back to the seventeenth century. Premonstratensian fathers from the former Reichenstein monastery near Kalterherberg built it between 1649 and 1650.

The project was initiated by their prior, Stephan Horrichem. The church became the community’s first parish church.

St. Michael in Höfen

Haus Troistorff is a distinguished timber-framed residence and one of Monschau’s protected historic buildings. The house was built in 1783 for the cloth manufacturer Matthias Peter Wolfgang Troistorff. Its architect is unknown, but the building took its name from its original owner.
