What to See in Sirmione
Scaligero Castle
One of the first sights encountered in Sirmione is Scaligero Castle, also known as Rocca Scaligera. The medieval fortress stands at the entrance to the historic centre and is surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda, making it a rare example of a lake fortification.
Members of the Scaliger family of Verona built the castle during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Its defensive design remains unusually complete, and the building is considered one of Italy’s best-preserved castles. The towers, walls and water-surrounded position make it one of Sirmione’s defining landmarks.
Saint Anne Church
Near the castle, Saint Anne Church is also known as Sant’Anna della Rocca or Sant’Anna della Porta. This Roman Catholic church sits on Sirmione’s narrow peninsula and forms part of the historic setting around the fortress.
Its position makes it a natural stop while exploring the entrance to the old town, before continuing into the peninsula’s quieter streets.
Santa Maria Maggiore Church
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, also called Santa Maria della Neve, is Sirmione’s parish church. It offers another perspective on the town’s religious and architectural heritage as you move through the historic centre.
Together with the nearby castle and other churches, it helps give Sirmione’s centre its distinctive historic character.
San Pietro in Mavino Church
In the northern part of Sirmione’s historic centre, San Pietro in Mavino is a small church that is easy to overlook. It is particularly known for its frescoes, which are the main reason to step inside and take a closer look.
The church is regarded as one of the prettiest around Lake Garda, despite its modest scale. Its quieter setting provides a contrast with the busier streets closer to the castle.
Museo Grotte di Catullo
The Museo Archeologico di Sirmione presents the history of Sirmione and the ancient settlements of the lower Garda area. Its collection includes important finds from the Grotte di Catullo, such as architectural elements, mosaics and richly decorated remains.
The museum opened to the public in 1999. Among its most notable details are the surviving fresco and stucco decorations that once enriched the residential rooms of the Roman villa.
Grotte di Catullo
At the end of the peninsula, the Grotte di Catullo preserves the remains of a grand Roman villa. The archaeological site is associated with olive trees and broad views over Lake Garda, giving the ancient remains an especially striking setting.
The site is one of the clearest reminders that Sirmione’s history extends well beyond its medieval castle. The museum and archaeological area can be considered together, with the museum providing context for the remains and their decoration.
Chiesa di San Francesco d’Assisi
In Colombare, the Chiesa di San Francesco d’Assisi is one of the local places of worship to notice outside the central peninsula. It offers a reason to explore another part of Sirmione beyond the main historic centre.
Santa Maria Immacolata Church
In Lugana, Sirmione, Santa Maria Immacolata Church is also known as the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Lugana. This local church provides another stop among Sirmione’s places of worship.
Saint Ursula Church
Saint Ursula Church is located in Rovizza, another part of Sirmione away from the central peninsula. It is one of the local churches that can be discovered while exploring the wider town.
Sirmione’s Thermal Waters and Ancient History
Sirmione’s identity is shaped not only by its monuments but also by its thermal waters. The Romans valued the peninsula for its scenery and naturally heated waters, and thermal springs remain an important part of the town’s character today.
The area also contains evidence of prehistoric settlement, adding another layer to its long history. From the Roman villa and archaeological finds to the medieval water castle and parish churches, Sirmione brings together several distinct periods in a relatively compact setting.
Sirmione is part of Lombardy, a region with many historic cities and lakeside destinations. It can also be combined with visits to nearby places such as Milan, Brescia or Limone sul Garda.
